View Full Version : Do better looking people get treated better?
I was watching an episode of Dr. Phil(DP is the man) and he was doing an episode about whether or not better looking people get treated better in the real world as opposed to average looking or not so good looking people. I'm curious as to everyone's opinion. I noticed that when I go to a store, people come over to me right away but a few of my friends who are not the best looking get treated fairly well. Maybe it's me, I don't know.
vienna waits 07-27-2006, 12:29 AM yeah, i saw that episode.
Hollow 07-27-2006, 12:31 AM i saw that episode too, it was very interesting.
of course some people are just rude, but i think most of the time, it's all in their subconscious...they don't realize that they're paying attention to some people and not others just because they're more attractive.
Brad Russ 07-27-2006, 12:36 AM Good looking people do get treated better than average looking, and unattractive people. I have no doubts about that. I see it everyday. It's not right, but it's true, and it's the way it's always been.
swedeace 07-27-2006, 12:38 AM I haven't seen the Dr. Phil special, but I do believe it is true. It's a very interesting theory to observe and study, actually. It has also been proven in other similar studies that attractive people do get noticed more so than average-looking or less-than-average-looking people. I guess it's because humans tend to pre-judge on the outside because that is what is noticed way before actually other non-verbals. It's a sad human behavior, but we humans can't help it.
TVFactFan 07-27-2006, 12:40 AM Yeah I believe that, a extremely OVERWEIGHT person may not get hired because of their size or Someone who is not that attractive. Of course companies have to pretend that's not the case-lol
Courtnee 07-27-2006, 12:40 AM Like the people above, I saw that episode.
I think it's really gae too. I find that my service varies with what I wear. Like, If I wear something like a low v neck shirt then I get more attention, mainly from male employees. It's ********.
Brieannas21 07-27-2006, 01:08 AM I vote Yes, Especially if you're tall and blonde IMO
James"Thunder"Early 07-27-2006, 01:10 AM Unfortunately, yes.
Janice 07-27-2006, 12:07 PM Most definitely. I've read and seen of many studies that prove it. Dateline and similiar shows have done undercover work on this. I remember one woman put on a padded suit that made her look fat. People either ignored her or were rude to her. It's a sad commentary on our society.
gilligan fanatic 07-27-2006, 12:11 PM to some degree, I think they are treated nicer, and are hit on more, but if it is between a hot stupid person and a smart ugly person for a job I think the ugly (or less attractive) person would get a job.
LuLu Rogers 07-27-2006, 12:43 PM I've also seen that Dr. Phil episode. I think it's really sad that it happens that way, but it is very true. I see it all the time.
Chocoholic 07-27-2006, 12:46 PM I do think attractive people get better treatment. I think we judge people by appearance way to much in this society. I place a huge amount of blame on Hollywood.
TVFactFan 07-27-2006, 12:51 PM I'm guilty of treating attractive people better. When i was in college and worked in the food line as a server, I would only be nice to pretty women. If a unattractive women came to my line I was rude and not as helpful and friendly as I was with the pretty girls. But I was 19-lol

But aren't you still that way? LOL
dlemond 07-27-2006, 12:59 PM Attractive people get treated somewhat better.
Not by me, necessarily.
But any attractive person being inconsiderate, rude, or a plain jerk, gets treated worse by me though.
I've no tolerance for jerks in general, and people who think they are hot sh-- need putting in their place.
TVFactFan 07-27-2006, 12:59 PM But aren't you still that way? LOL
Well Today I'm not rude. just not as nice as I am to a prettier women. If you came to my line in college I would have been SUPER SUPER NICE!!!-lol

Yesterday a guy at work told me I smelled good, he wasn't my type, So should I have been rude to him or not as friendly?

You should have said-"Thank you" without smiling
I think I treat people the same no matter what they look like. Although I as a cashier I can't really say to customers "could you get out of my lane I want to ring up that really hot guy over there". Not that I wouldn't mind have a lane filled with nothing but hot guys;) but with my luck they would all be married anyways.

But be honest, if you had a unattractive you were waiting on and an attractive guy was next in line you know u would be trying to get DONE with that unattractive as fast as you can so you could wait on the HOT guy? Am i wrong?-lol
TheGreatPretender 07-27-2006, 07:07 PM ehhh this thread depresses me.
vienna waits 07-27-2006, 07:33 PM not gonna lie i don't think i treat people who look dirty and unkept (i'm a cashier) the same way that i treat people who look clean. it's not necessarily better looking people, but some people i can't help but think, "take a bath!" today these dirty people went through my line with lots of chips, alcohol, and cigs and i knew i didn't care for them when i saw them. and then they ended up having insufficient funds on their debit cards and left unable to pay for any of their stuff.

I know, I just felt it was a dumb joke, LOL. :p
cmcb06 07-28-2006, 02:04 AM Yeah deffinately.
Czas na Zywiec 07-28-2006, 02:28 AM for sure. i've been trying to look nicer at work. style my hair, wear good cologne, lose some weight. and it's working. tho it's mostly women 40 and older right now that are tipping good lol, but I'm trying to work the younger women now. :)
tdf4077 07-29-2006, 11:08 AM I think in all honesty, it stems on how you feel about yourself and also how you portray yourself to others; yes, I do get treated better now that I am size 4, NOT because I look better, is because I feel better about myself; and I think people pick up on that certain vibe; self-confidence can make an average looking person...very alluring!!!:)
I think that you've probably got a fair point...it's a confidence thing. I'm one of those that would be classified as "unattractive," and I have pretty low confidence, so I tend to assume I'm treated differently because of how I look...
But, also in all fairness, I too used to work in retail, and though you can't discriminate based on looks, if someone I thought was super hot came up to my line, I would turn up the charm a bit...
This is a depressing thread, but it brings up a lot of good points...
Tyra Banks did a similar episode whereby she put on a fat suit...
