PASADENA, California (Reuters) - NBC on Friday said it plans to air a two-hour concert by global pop star Madonna this November as it struggles to climb from the basement of U.S. television ratings.

"Madonna: The Confessions Tour Live," is being taped this summer in London's Wembley Stadium, and will feature songs from the Material Girl's CD, "Confessions On a Dance Floor."

The pop singer's shows are notorious for their sexual content, and NBC said it will tape the concert and pick which songs and dances to edit from the network's broadcast.


"She is going to do her show, and we will decide which numbers are in the (TV special) and which are not, and that is whole numbers. We are not going to make piecemeal edits," Kevin Reilly, president of NBC Entertainment, told a gathering of TV critics.

NBC is mired in fourth place in viewership ratings among the four major U.S. broadcast networks, including ABC, CBS and Fox, and ratings success is critical for boosting advertising revenue. The Madonna special is expected to lure audiences who then may return to NBC to watch new shows.

Exactly. I will watch her...but i won't watch shows on NBC simply because they showed us Madonna. when they have good programming, THEN, I will watch their channel. Idiots!

It's been a while since I've seen a good concert on network TV.

This has potential to get Confessions On a Dance Floor back on Billboard. IMO, the album was great, it just wasn't marketed properly here in the U.S.

Ooooo, i so agree. I am a huge Madonna fan. Have been ever since she came out. I would rather watch a good concert on tv than some of this reality junk that is shown nowadays.

Madonna has won her battle to keep a controversial crucifixion routine in her Confessions concert in her upcoming TV special. Religious leaders were outraged when they first heard about the part of the show where Madonna, wearing a fake crown of thorns, descends on a suspended mirrored, disco ball-type cross. They urged the pop superstar to scrap the irreverent routine, but she refused - and now the singer insists it remains when the concert special, Live To Tell, airs in America in November. Kevin Reilly, an executive at NBC - where the concert special will air - says, "She felt like that was a cornerstone of the show. We viewed it and didn't see it as being inappropriate."

I don't care for any of her comments outside of music.

I feel the same way about Lisa Whelchel. The lady is a freaking nut when it comes to parenting!, But am I going to stop watching "The Facts of Life" because of that? No.

(WENN) Bosses at US TV network NBC have elected to cut controversial crucifixion footage from Madonna's concert special when it airs next month. The TV executives have chosen not to air footage of Madonna recreating the dying pose of Jesus Christ on the cross while performing "Live To Tell" - an image which disgusted religious leaders around the world and led to protests outside venues on the Material Girl's recent Confessions tour. An NBC spokesperson says the decision to delete the footage was made in collaboration with Madonna, who is an executive producer of the special. Last month, the New York Daily News reported that the crucifixion scene, which has sparked outrage among religious leaders, might cause the network to cancel the planned special. The singer has defended the crucifixion scene as part of her appeal to audiences to donate to AIDS charities. As soon as plans to broadcast the concert were made public, the network began receiving criticism from several family and religious groups. The American Family Association has been one of the most vocal groups against airing the special and even threatened to have its members boycott companies that ran commercials during the show. The two-hour concert, Madonna: The Confessions Tour - Live From London, is scheduled to air November 22.

Personally, i think Madonna decided to edit out the crucifixtion part because she wants to score a few points.
Madonna has taken a lot of flack in the press the last week about her "adoption" of a little boy (many think she used her money and influence to in essence buy that kid instead of following the rules and guidelines; you kow the stuff us normal folk have to do) so maybe she caved in to get some good publicity for a change.
