View Full Version : Found out a lot of DVD Traders who collect Sports are SCARED to get rid of
TVFactFan 07-24-2006, 06:58 PM their VHS Tapes/Masters on a Sports Trading Site I belong To. Their reason was because of the problems they had with DVD's and DVD Recorders and just didn't want to be out of luck if they throw away their VHS tapes. Just curious if DVD Traders feel the same way on this board when it comes to TV Shows?

i dont own a single vhs, and have over 11000 different dvds right now
remember a dude named, chicken little ??
use a quality blank and a decent recorder, and there will not be a problem
most problems are self inflicted
the same ones that whine now, are the ones who bought the blanks on sale, and off the wall brand recorders

You brought this up at least three times before that I remember, each time the folks saying no. All gave their reasons for using dvd and not vhs. Are you looking for a change of heart?

Lamont 07-24-2006, 08:01 PM dont save the vhs tapes
takes up too much room
if u r worried then make a back up disc to be safe
for instance
GIMME A BREAK
i converted that set last year from like 55 tapes
once it was done, checked and ready
the tapes went in the trash can
debwalsh 07-24-2006, 08:50 PM I don't dispose of tapes unless the show has seen a quality retail release, so only recent stuff have I recycled. It's a function of my OCD - that and the fact that I could not live long enough to transfer everything I have on tape onto disc the way I'd like to. And I consider today's DVD recorders to be a step on the evolutionary ladder of home recording - so discs I make of precious tapes today are snapshots - I might get better equipment later and can create better disc backups of the original recordings.
Then again, I do have 3 working Beta decks, 2 working multi-standard (PAL/NTSC/Secam) decks, plus an S-VHS deck and an older (pre-S-VHS) high-end Sony VHS deck. I have reached the point where I'm no longer recording to tape, however. But that's a decision I made in the past couple of weeks.

I'm not saying which is better just was curious to see if someone on here felt the same
lilhave 07-24-2006, 09:18 PM Almost every trader who has a decent size collection, has at least one set of 25 disks or more. Assume each disk has 4 one hour episodes. 100 shows for the series, no big amount. If someone wants to trade, time depends on how many burners or duplicators are available. Can take one day or up to a few days and each copy will be good as the first.
Under the vhs method, you put 4 eps on a tape and you need 25 tapes. To burn, well, 100 hours takes 100 hours and it is now a 2nd generation tape. Real difficult for this chap to trade as it will be a third generation tape and look like crap. Of course you believe in trading one tape at a time. You are speaking of 1975 technology, why not use 2006 technology.

My Trades are SMALL(one tape) because what I want i very Rare. I'm a OneYearWonderCollector-lol I made make that my new screename
loren 07-24-2006, 09:23 PM hey solomon
even if you use dvds
you can keep a copy on a hard drive
every week in the sunday paper, there are smaller hard drives for absolutely free avaible
even up to 80 gig
that would hold about 15-20 discs worth
stash them in the closet, and theres your backup
even cheaper than my method of useig back up dvds, in a seperate location

Congratulations on your trading technique, and may you find all sorts of rare items. Problem is, the universal majority here don't trade that way, so you might find some difficulty in achieving your goal. It's the same as if you were strictly a vegetarian and you went to a steak house for dinner. Might be a problem satisfying your taste buds. Are their groups that trade one tape, one epsiode at a time? That may be the place to look for. As far as being curious. You were curious three other times. Do you feel times changed and peoples trading habits changed.?

Harv I just set up a One Tape Trade with Gilligan Fanatic for a One Year Wonder from 1993. So It's not to hard. Also I'm not saying it's good to throw Tapes away or Keep them, just seeing if the DVD traders on here feel the same as the Sports Collectors

A hard drive only works when you have a computer. No computer, no need for a hard drive. You forgot Solmon has Webtv and no computer.

Congrats on your trade with Gilligan. But you asked the same question 3 other times and is it possible it's getting redundant?
I just hope we don't get a three week hiatus and you ask again.

Harv I'm going to explain this to you for the last time. Even when i become a DVD trader, i will never have a interest in doing a big trade because i don't want to check 50 discs for possible glitches

I had the atari 800, then the atari 520st and then the 1040st. Great piece of machinery. Piracy killed it. Switched to the P.C. in 92.

No i don't see any one year wonders like Out of the blue or Lewis and Clark or
Park Place
digitalmonkey 07-24-2006, 10:31 PM Harv I'm going to explain this to you for the last time. Even when i become a DVD trader, i will never have a interest in doing a big trade because i don't want to check 50 discs for possible glitches-lol

Ah, gee, I so wanted to trade with you. Will have to pull up the britches, suck it in, and go on with life. A little sadder but one must take the pitfalls that are presented and go on living. But if do find some of those extra rare one shot wonders, I'll immediately copy it to tape and notify you. What I suggest is you don't wait for me to come thru, use your other sources.
A so sad Harv

See, now I understand you. If a guy has ten disks, you trade one disk at a time so the post office can make some money. You check each disk for glitches as it comes in but aren't you still checking ten disks, except it's one at a time then in bulk.

not 1, 5 to 10 discs
lazygrae 07-25-2006, 01:29 AM Excuse me if I'm ruining everyone's fun by bringing this thread back ON POINT, but I still have some tapes that I will keep until I have checked, and by that I mean sit down and watch, the entire dvd.
I only do this with homemade tv recordings because these are the ones that require editing, and I have found that sometimes, very, very seldom, but sometimes, the act of editing throws off the a/v sync. My theory is that, for whatever reason, sometimes linear editors, like Womble and VideoReDo, do not realign the GOP structure of the mpg properly and that results in throwing the sync off. I wish I had a theory to explain "why" so I could prevent it from ever happening in the first place. If anyone can shed any insight on this, let me know. Anyway, once I confirm that a disc is fine the tape goes in the "take to the local thrift store" pile.
I've only had this happen a few (less than 5) times, ever. Most of my tapes I got rid of long before I knew about this problem, but since discovering it, I have kept them. I don't really have that many tapes now, around 100, and I very seldom get them in trade so it's no big deal to keep them just in case. It's not like I have to worry about running out of space or anything because of them - they're just packed in boxes in storage.

debwalsh 07-25-2006, 07:53 AM Ultimately, it's got to be what you're comfortable living with. I sometimes feel these threads start off with a silent, "You must be a mental defective if ..." because some traders think there is one and only one way to do things (i.e., theirs). If you're comfortable ditching your tapes once you convert, and you're not unleashing unwatchable drek on the trading community as a result, then that works for you and go for it. If you're happier keeping those source tapes, then the storage issues are yours to deal with and more power to you.
If you want to trade small-scale, then what's the problem, unless you're making unreasonable demands on your trading partners as a result? There are people who consider anything smaller than 50 discs to be not worth their time, too (and those are the folk I'm not willing to trade with, because I personally have no desire to trade 50 discs at a time). So long as you clearly communicate the terms and both sides live up to those terms (and the terms place an equal or at least acceptable burden on both sides), the size of the trade is what it is.
JMas493 07-25-2006, 08:53 AM I am keeping the tapes of my important stuff, like my uncut Gunsmoke color hours, even after I transfer them to DVD.
You can be using the best blank DVDs and the best burners available, but nobody knows the life-expectancy of home-recorded DVDs yet. It is not certain that they will last as long as tapes have.
I hope my DVDs survive as long as I do. But if they don't, I have back-ups of my most irreplaceable stuff.

The shows that i want only have 3 or 4 eps anyway which makes it a one disc trade. It's not like I say-"ONLY ONE DISC TRADES". The shows I want don;t have a lot of eps to start with so there will never be 20-25 discs trades. Understand what I'm trying to explain to you Harv?

Sure do, if you understand what I'm saying. The wide, wide, wide, majority look for MORE THEN ONE DISC TRADES, trying have as complete a series as possible. A trader if he likes a particular show would like to have as much of that series as possible. Of course it's easier to trade or sell when a series is complete. One episode is needed just to complete a series.
Of course with no burner or duplicator your not equipped to do more then one or two tapes at a time. Maybe the time will come and you will like others want to have a complete run, till then do it one episode, on tape at a time.
I'm sure you have seen folks lists where completness is the vougue? Who knows, maybe when you purchase some equipment you will want to expand, till then, good luck in your quest for the one episode,WOC, and of course the promo included.

But what about when I want as many eps as possible of Out of the Blue from 1979 and there are only 2 out there? And then I want as many eps as possible of Lewis and Clark and there are only 4 out there? How could i complete the series if the eps are not out there?

thats quite simple
adjust your wants to something else, its much more fun to get things in the mailbox, rather that cry about not haveing things
enjoy the items you get, and just maybe soe day that other crap will show up
seriously, theres nothing better than going to the mail box and getting a trade lot of 250 discs from a long time reliable and honest trader of which you have a long term relationship with, or even 30 , 40 , 50 disc package as well
its like being 6 years old and its xmas

you have to admit, thats some good assed feeling getting stuff
i remember about 4 years ago, i received a 1961 nfl championship game on a couple dvds
boy howdy i got in the house and played it all the way through
i wasnt a tv dvd whore then
i had a few packers dvds of games, etc
but talk about sheer joy
i still get that feeling even afterclose to 15000 dvds
yes i have some unreal wants as well
but i enjoy the other victories while i wait for the real big score to find my mailbox
i have already received numerous things that i thought werent possible
i remember how jazzed up i got when i put the 40 disc seahunt set together
numerous deals and trades to get this group and that group, and one day, bingo, i found the entire last season, and there it was all done, what a struggle, but a great end result --feeling wise
this stuff is a hobby
the dictionary says a hobby is supposed to be fun
loosen up and enjoy this stuff
you know the rare shows your seeking --purely suck--viewing wise
thats why i suggest some other diversions to keep you occupied, some day that stuff will show, i know it wil

Problem is, this is basically not a sports trading board but a tv show board and if you look at your requests, most go unheeded. As Lorn said, expand your interests but with no ability to duplicate a disk, your options are limited.
You are relegated to one disk, one tape, 2 or 3 episodes at a time.
Since your interests lie in the 1970-1980 range are you saying you dislike all series that ran for 2 or 3 years or more? I feelit's that as you have no ability to duplicate them. To narrow yourself down to only series that were short lived, for in most cases ratings were poor, will insure you of not doing much trading.
No reason to bring up sports as it's a different game. One NBA game, one baseball game or one football game can be placed on a tape and if you want to store millions of tapes, that's your business but tv shows that run for years vs a sporting event which is 3 hours and over is not a fair comparison.

Well the Shows that ran much longer I have on Retail DVD's. I like to trade for shows you can't buy from amazon.com or Best buy so the hobby can always be interesting and never get boring. I love the challenge of finding a show that was only on the air for 7 weeks because it makes trading more fun. I don't really worry about how big I can make my collection, my main focus is finding those obscure shows that I don;t see on anyone's list.

I can understand what you're saying. You're trying to get obsecure shows from the 70's and 80's manly that you can't find anywhere else. Why would anyone want to trade for a whole set when the show's out in the stores already on DVD? If I was trading I'd probably keep it small too. All people are different . Some have Big collections and some small ones. Plus when they're small it's easier to be able to watch them to make sure their isn't a defect on it.
Lamont 07-25-2006, 05:02 PM I do not understand this at all
we have had this same thread like 10 times this year
ALWAYS started by the same person and the THEME is always the same
"DVDS GO BAD--- SAVE YOUR VHS TAPES" (never mind that tapes degrade also, and can get damaged and are much harder to back up and the fact that each time u make a copy it degrades them and the copy ALWAYS loses quality)
and
"BIG TRADES BAD--- SMALL TRADES GOOD"
i fully 100% understand where everyone stands on these issues
so why do we have the same discussion over and over and over
each time i see the thread started i think "OH! he must have changed his opinions, b/c its here again---- and no, it is always the same"

LOL
i just dont see the point of rehashing this topic every 3 or 4 weeks, unless opinions change

Be fair, now, the "context" of the "argument" regarding VHS being better then DVD is always slightly different.

Some people play golf for fun. Others play music or even do DVD trading. And then there are others...so yeah, that's what I'm saying. (Sorry.) Only the next time, he may revert back to the "trade 1 disc at a time" theme, although it did get some face time in this thread, too. So a tough call. (shrug) Should we take bets? -lol

lilhave 07-25-2006, 06:56 PM I couldn't be more happy, No one can get my goat tonight. Just got 26 dvds of Tales of Wells Fargo, with Dale Robertson in the lead, my favorite by the way. The color ones, I give a 10.0. and 14 disks of Iron Horse, also with Robertson. Will check them out now. Solomon can tell me he saves shows on toilet paper for all I care.
You know what I'm watching tonight.
