This is just speculation of course. Two things to keep in mind, Louie was constantly riding him for being a poor earner and he also was going to school.
Do you think he was fired by Louie or did he quit and find a better job?
I think he was fired. In like the second episode louie told alex he was going to let him go but didn't. I think he kept doing bad and he fired him.
New York City wasn't a very pleasant place in the 70's. He probably just "vanished."

Brian, didn't we discuss this before? I seem to have a deja vu abt this. I thought we said he went with Tiger (Brady Bunch) and that little girl from Family Matters.

I heard John opened up a Bed and Breakfast in Maine with Chuck Cunningham.

I've always assumed he left. Maybe he and his wife moved away?
I did quite like John. He was a likeable enough character. But I love Jim.

I think he was fired. His last appearance was in the two part episode Memories of Cab 804 and he was the one who wrecked the cab everyone loved so much. Even Alex, who was probably John's best friend from the garage seemed to be a little upset at him.

Yeah, I remember when he came in, cheerfully announcing to everyone that he was okay, and the other cabbies all walked straight past him, over to the smashed-up Cab 804.
Coincidentally, in the season two episode Flour Child of Frasier, Frasier, Niles and Martin in a cab (in which the driver goes into labour) which is called Cab 804. I've always wondered if this is a Taxi reference, as several people involved with Taxi were involved with Frasier - director James Burrows and writer David Lloyd, to name two of them. What do the rest of you think?

He was fired after wrecking Cab 804. See the first season two-part finale. Let's face it, the guy was never really cut out to be a cab driver, or a likable cast member for that matter.
