It's probably all they can afford. There's alot of poor people out there, therefore alot of fans to give away. A box fan is better than nothing. I had a box fan for years, and it was far better then when I had no fan at all. I have a stand up fan right now, which really isn't much different than a box fan, and it's just fine for me.

...Actually, I found a use for box fans. While back, I was watching the Food Network. And the host of a show showed how to dehydrate jerky using box fans and those filters you put up in the ventilation shaft.

What cool air at night?Just because the sun had set doesn't mean the air has cooled down a whole lot. Our low at night is 80. ;D

Personally, I think this works best:

Stick one box fan at the entry of a doorway, or as close as you can - facing inward toward the room. Stick another, facing outward, in the window. The 2nd fan pulling the wind generated by the first out will create a nice little breeze - hopefully.
