Does anyone else think it's wrong?

I know that most people who call people "schizo" - whether they're referring to people who actually have schizophrenia, or another mental illness, or whether they're referring to people who they think are just eccentric or weird or a little bit crazy - don't mean to be offensive. However, I don't really like it when I hear someone refer to people with schizophrenia as being "schizo" or calling someone who is a little bit mad that.

For one thing, I think that for someone who actually has schizophrenia, the term "schizo" seems a little dismissive and disrespectful. I know most people who call them that don't intend to be that way, but that's how the term seems to me.

I also don't like the term "schizo" as an insult - i.e., if someone is a bit strange, weird, acts in a crazy manner, I don't think they should be told they're "schizo" as an insult.

I am driven UP THE WALL when people use "schizo" or "schizophrenic" to describe someone who has frequent changes in personality.

I tend to find it annoying that it's used as an insult - people wouldn't say to others, "You've got cancer" or "You've got AIDS" as an insult. At least, I hope they wouldn't (and I've never heard anyone say that) because they're both horrible diseases, and I feel that using them as an insult trivialises them, even if that's not what people intend.

Unfortunately, I think there are some people who don't understand that mental illnesses are serious too, and shouldn't be laughed at, or used to insult people.

1 - use the word "schizo" as an insult
2 - call others who have conditions like depression, suicidal tendencies, bipolar disorder, or even schizophrenia "schizos"
3 - judge people who are on medication, seeing a psychiatrist, or have been in a psychiatrist ward, and assume that they're crazy
4 - think that people with schizophrenia and schizophrenia-like disorders don't matter, aren't as adequate of human beings as everyone else is, and are nothing but crazy in the head; and that laughing at and making fun of them is ok.

stupid, stupid, stupid. i hope those kind of people develop schizophrenia one day so they can realize what scum they were before.

I agree, it pisses me off just as much as words and phrases like ******, f*g, trailer trash and any other term that's used to describe someone in a derogatory way. Just because it's a more accepted word in society, doesn't make it right to say.

It just goes to show how ignorant a person can be who uses the word as an insult, or even as an adjective! They probably don't even know what schizophrenia really entails, and just throw it around like it's an everyday word.

It's a shame, because it is a very serious disease and should not be thrown around like that. Along with many other mental illnesses. They are just so misunderstood.

Well I was going for multiple personality LOL, but yep, bipolar is incorrectly called schizophrenia a lot too.

I don't think that mental illnesses are more important or serious than diseases such as cancer. But I think they're equally serious. But I suppose someone would have to experience the illnesses to offer a proper insight.

People who don't suffer from depression, or who haven't read much on the subject, lump all that under being "crazy." F that. And F the people who try to tell you "oh, cheer up" like you're just sad because you didn't get your way or something. :rolleyes: Oh how I hate the ignorant about depression. pissed:

Yeah. I think the term "depression" can sometimes be used too loosely - some people can be apt to say they're "depressed", when they're really only feeling quite miserable about something.

it aggravates me when someone on a message board or something posts a thread saying that they are extremely depressed and having suicidal feelings, and (the most recent thread about it on here doesn't apply, thank god) people accuse them of being whiny and looking for attention. um hi, THEY NEED ATTENTION BEFORE THEY KILL THEMSELVES! :rolleyes: when one is suicidal, they have to talk to someone who shows that they care; and if a message board is their last resort (or even their first, it does not matter) to find that someone, so be it. if you can't accept people trying to help themselves in crises, especially if you've never gone through the feelings they're having, just shut the **** up and leave your lousy comments to yourself. hearing "shut up you whiny bitch" type of feedback makes a much more significant, and worse, effect on the person in need for help; and slowly encourages the idea that suicide isn't the wrong answer, even if it's not intended.
