Teletoon Retro Channel To Launch Spring 2007

MONTREAL-- With nostalgic of old cartoons, the new classic cartoon channel Télétoon Rétro will be on foot in Spring 2007 in English, and in French by Fall 2007.

Télétoon currently obtains the rights to air The Flinstones, The Jetsons, PScooby Doo and The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show in their Classic TV block.

“Our viewers demand it”, announced Pascale Guillote, spokesman of Télétoon, in Toronto. “The request is high from feedback at our website”.

The channel wants to air cartoons from at least ten years ago and more. "We only need one distributor for cable and satellite broadcast", he said.

In addition to airing American classics from Warner Bros. animation and the Hanna-Barbara series, the specialized channel will try to obtain the rights of the cartoons which made fury in Quebec in the years 1980, from Goldorak, Albator, etc.

It was a controversial cartoon back then, according to Mrs. Guillote.

Télétoon Rétro obtained a licence to broadcast the digital channel from the CRTC last October. The licence is valid until August 30, 2012.

Goldorak, Albator Slated for New Teletoon Channel
Posted by Emru Townsend

Monday, June 26, 2006 at 12:50 AM (EST)

Starting in spring 2007, Teletoon—Canada's all-cartoon network—is launching Teletoon Retro, a new channel devoted to cartoons that are at least ten years old. That means shows like The Flintstones, The Jetsons and various Looney Tunes packages for both English and French versions of the channel. But according to a Journal de Montréal article, there are some extra goodies slated for the French channel: the company is looking into broadcast rights for the French-dubbed anime many of us Quebecers grew up with, like Goldorak (UFO Robot Grendizer) and Albator (Captain Harlock). The author of the article is frustratingly terse; she doesn't mention any other potential series, like Captaine Flamme (Captain Future) or Bataille des planètes (Battle of the Planets), which I think would be cool to have on the air again. We'll get more details as things fall into place.

I hear their new Teletoon Retro channel will also include some classic international cartoons from Japan, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. I'm bugging them to also try to air a classic Russian cartoon I grew up with called Nu, pogodi! :)

After what Cartoon Network [U.S.] did to "ATOMIC BETTY", Teletoon has the GALL to import most of CN's former cartoon staples for their OWN "retro cartoon channel"???

TV Knowledge Fan:

I think Teletoon Retro will most likely be basically a Boomerang type copycat channel, since both have the same contract rights. Teletoon Retro will air a few International classic cartoons (Like "Kimba The White Lion"), and a bunch of Canadian ones (Like "The Racoons", "Inspector Gadget", etc.) but I have my doubts that it'll have a big impression overall.

Both Cartoon Network and Teletoon have been sharing cartoon contracts with each other for several years now.

Teletoon also made much use of the digitally-remastered installments of Hanna-Barbera's 1975 Tom & Jerry Show in the late 1990s as part of its late-night RetroNights package. Undoubtedly this new Teletoon Retro will show them as well.
