..."THE DON RICKLES SHOW". It was a comedy/variety series featuring "Mr. Warmth" as the center of attention, with Pat McCormick as his "comedy foil" [and head writer] and Don's interactions with his guests and comedy sketches
and production numbers (notice a lot of his friends were among the "big guests"). I'm probably one of the few people to have ever seen it, let alone remember it! I think the success of the show had a lot to do with the fact that Rickles (and his public persona) wasn't the best choice in the world to be a variety show host. You're right, it WASN'T a success!

I would either want the Danny Thomas or Ed Sullivan. I am not really a Regis fan. Joey Bishop is preety funny though.

....most of the guests that appeared on Don's show were friends (sure, he had them!) and cronies. ABC, however, also slipped some of the "second string" players from their weekly series into the mix {i.e. Ed Nelson of "PEYTON PLACE"}.
What did Rickles in was the one-two "punch" of "THE CBS FRIDAY NIGHT MOVIES" and NBC's "THE NAME OF THE GAME" (the Barry/Stack/Franciosa trilogy). I was probably one of the few people who saw "THE DON RICKLES SHOW" every week....I still remember the Christmas show, where, towards the end, Don's pleading for advice on how to get rid of the spirit who's been reminding him how bad his previous life was..."Give him a cookie and tell him to go home!!", the audience roared. That has stuck with me to this very day.....

Did you like Rickles-"CPO Sharkey?"

...likeable person in a situation comedy, it was Aaron Ruben {"THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW", "GOMER PYLE, U.S.M.C.", "SANFORD & SON", etc.}. His format for "C.P.O. SHARKEY" was perfect for Don. Make him a bombastic Navy officer as well as a "softie" underneath. I'm sure the series might have lasted longer if NBC had known WHAT to do with it! The network was in bad shape in 1976-'77. And they let a lot a great talent slip through their floorboards because of their position and ratings share....including Rickles.
Too bad, 'cause I really liked the show!!!

Yep NBC was in bad shape around 1977. Chico abd the Man just lost his Big Star, Sanford and Son was in it's last season, and there were no other Comedies worth watching
