I have always been partial do the old banana barges, which consisted of a sliced banana in bowl shaped like a boat, two scoops of chocolate ice cream, covered with whipped cream and topped with a cherry.

There was a place in Brooklyn called Jahn's that specialized in these. Yum, yum, the best. For liquid, you washed it down with seltzer. What's seltzer?

I was just mentioning seltzer. In some parts of the country I believe it doesn't exist.

You are 150 percent correct. It was on the corner of Flatbush and Church, surrounded by a ton of movie theaters, The Kenmore, the Albermarle, the Granada, The Rialto, and the Kings. Saturday night in those days was a hangout for the college kids. You went to one of those theaters and without late shows, all broke at 11:45 and now began a mad dash to Jahn's or Garfields which was right across the street. If you didn't run, you didn't get a seat. Remember at Jahn's the "kitchen sink"? Took 6 guys to finish it. Then there was the "tall in the saddle" Biggest chocolate ice cream soda I have ever seen. They don't make ice cream parlors like that anymore. Can recall the malteds, the floats and of course the ever popular "double root beer float"

It was a great neighborhood those many years ago, now walking there at night puts your life at stake.

That was such a cool place (Jahn's) and you're right the neighborhood has changed. They had so many great stores. Who could ever forget Erasmus or the old cemetary across the street. Who could forget the Grenada movie theatre? OMGoodness The Kenmore and The Albermarlie. Those were the good ole days... :)

I was born and raised in Flatbush, on New York and Maple. Within walking distance, no more then 7 blocks from my house, in different directions were the "neighborhood theaters", that played movies after they left the major theaters. I had the Rogers, the Linden and the Patio. In those days these theaters changed their attractions each friday, posting it the "dailies" Included were Saturdays childrens matinee. The kids would get the papers, and in the winter would decide which theater to go to. Mostly it was two westerns, 10 cartoons, one chapter of a serial,(I have 230 serials intact), and the Pathe news. The cost was 25 cents and with my G.O. card 10 cents was knocked off. The theater now cost a fifteen cents, candy was a dime, popcorn a dime, and soda a dime. So for a half a buck our parents got away from us for almost 4 hours and we had a blast.

The houses your speaking of were between Bedford and Rogers, and then between Rogers and Nostrand. Yes, beautiful homes. I played ball for Wingate and then for Pace in college. My great thrill was hitting a triple off the right field wall at Ebbets against Tilden. Born 7 blocks from Ebbets but hated the Dodgers, loyal Giant fan.
