They are both my favorite bands

The doors have more music in the analogue domain so I say The Doors :)

I enjoy both bands, have nearly every record both have produced. At one time I believed that Morrison's lyrics were genius, But eventually came of the opinion that he was a "poser" as far as the dark side is concerned. ( he was writing for shock value, and really didn't have a message the way many claimed he did. But their stuff is very good.

In terms of musical competence, I have to give the nod to Purple. Funny thing about them...and I'm not taking anything away from Blackmore as far as being a guitarist. But the age old struggle between Blackmore vs Gillan as far as who was the main attraction, was a red herring. Jon Lord was the biggest part of their sound, so Blackmore fighting Gillan for the spotlight was stupid

I'm not into either band, I'm generally not into bands that are promoted by the media and popular with the masses. I've always been that way.

David Coverdale was once associated with Deep Purple before he formed his band Whitesnake. I liked Whitesnake when they first started out, their albums from the late 1970's to early 1980's are pretty good, especially their "Ready And Willing" album, that's a really good album. Then in the late 1980's, Coverdale converted Whitesnake into a hair metal band and it all went downhill from there.

I love The Doors. Fantastic music. It is a shame that Jim Morrison died so young at 27.

But concerning Morrison, with the gifts he did have, he was sort of an idiot. I blame that a lot on youth, he went from a nobody film student to this international rock star almost overnight. It is amazing to me as someone who has (had/have) substance abuse issues that the guy mainly drank so much alcohol (and drugs but mostly alcohol) that he died at 27. He was a mess and he knew he was a mess and he went to Paris to try to clean up his act and get away from the scene, but for whatever reason he died (heroin?) I have seen pictures of him "normal" and smiling, and he seemed without the booze, antics and drama not to be such a bad guy. It's a shame because he could have if he chose a singer for many decades, but on the other hand, I think being a famous singer killed him.


There is an interview on Youtube of Jim Morrison's father who was a Navy Admiral who was actually in Vietnam mostly during Jim's rise to fame. I knew this before and expected to see this hard ass military man, but he seemed the opposite, a nice, kind, decent man.


One thing, Admiral Morrison said, that I think Jim would have hated was that his father referred to Jim as "an entertainer". Something like "he chose to be an entertainer...." I think Jim saw himself as a "poet" and an "artist" but not an "entertainer". Supposedly again, I think this was a reason why Jim walked out and went to Paris, he wanted to be a writer, not an "entertainer". But he died. Alcohol and drugs are very hard to get away from once you start them and like them.

Not a big fan of either, though I do like a few of Deep Purple's songs.
