I don't smoke... I used to smoke 6 yrs ago, but never got hooked on it so I just stopped.

I heard about this one guy smoker a few years ago, who wanted to stop smoking. What he did was, he brought Nicorette gum and some regular sugar-free gum... I wanna say it was Trident, Chiclets or some other square-shaped gum. The first week, he chewed Nicorette gum. The second week, he would cut off 1/4 of the Nicorette gum and mix it with a 1/4 piece of sugar-free gum. The third week, 1/2 piece of NIcorette gum with 1/2 piece of sugar-free gum, and so on, until he quit smoking for good and was able to wean himself off of the Nicorette gum.

I really have no idea how well that would work, since I never got hooked or anything. *shrug*

I quit cold turkey.
I wasn't a very heavy smoker; a pack would last me a few days, except on weekends when I would be out drinking, then I would smoke alot. I really had to break the cycle of wanting to smoke while i drank, so I stopped going out to my usual bars for a courple of months.
The rest of the time if I wanted to smoke (like at work) believe it or not, tootsie pops helped me. I ate one whenever I wanted to smoke.
Eventually I was able to return to the bars without wanting to smoke.
It was tough, but worth it.

My hubby got sick of paying $10 for a pack of cigarettes (I got sick of it more, and I don't smoke). So I made him quit cold turkey. :)

This is a stupid question, but what does cold turkey mean? Is that a slang term for cigarrettes?

Do you want to be dumb enough to pay $10 for a pack of cigarettes?

Not too bright, The Girl Next Door. In Quebec, you can legally buy 15 grams of marijuana and not be charged for possesing it. That's $350.00 you can spend legally without being charged. If your dumb enough to throw away that kind of money weekly, then I have no sympathy for you. :)

Same goes for cigarettes. If you're dumb enough to blow $100 for a carton, then I have no sympathy for your stupid addiction. :)

My dad got the laser thing. It worked for him...he hasn't smoked since. He just chews gum like a horse all freaking day. But he's not smoking.

Excellent!

Tobacco companies are crooks. Support him for quitting! He's trying, and that the most important thing. Suport him all the way! :)

That's a good question, As a matter of fact, I'm not to sure where the phrase came from, so I looked it up on ask.com and i got a link to a yahoo page that described where certain phrases came from. Their explanation:

Dear Yahoo!:
What is the origin of the phrase "cold turkey"?
Sama

Dear Sama:
Let's talk turkey. Since "cold turkey" is normally used in the context of quitting an unhealthy habit, such as smoking, we had a hunch its origins had something to do with addiction.
Sure enough, a quick Yahoo! search on "cold turkey" + "origin" led us to an entry on IdiomSite. Here, we learned that the phrase describes the skin's reaction to heroin withdrawal. As an addict stops using the drug, blood is drawn toward the internal organs, thereby leaving the skin to resemble a cold, plucked turkey.

The popular Q&A site AllExperts dates the phrase back to 1910 and states that it originally meant "without preparation," referring to the ease of making a dish of cold turkey. In 1922, the expression acquired its darker connotation related to drug withdrawal.

What the **** does this have to do with the meaning of Cold Turkey, which is what the original question was.

i'm still trying to figure this out - do they shoot him with a laser every time he has a craving? why dont they just go with electro-rectal shock therapy?

"electro-rectal shock therapy?"

NEVER EVER have that done to yourself. My bro's mother-in-law had it done ot herself 20 years ago to cure her drug addiction yeah it worked, but having your head fried with electronic waves permanently dements your brain. And she is very demented.

Also Look at actoress Zsa Zsa Gabor, in the late 60's her daughter Francessca had her commited to an institution where countless electro shock, and many other horrorific things were done to her. Fortunately she was released shortly after, it's a sheer miracle that she survived so well.

Zsa truly is a fighter.
