.....the Penny episodes when she was abused by her mom. Those are not my favorite episodes from season six. I mean damn, the lady pulls out the iron cord and burns her daughter. I used to laugh at many of the material "Good Times" was making, but this was serious. Once again, whatever we think of Janet Jackson, she played those three/four episodes good. It seems like everytime we turn around, something was wrong. She had burns on her back, her mother had injured her arm.
The episode was good because it seemed so real. I can relate to young kids liking older people. I'm that way. I have nephews, nieces, and cousins and they all like me. Someone that small and adoable being beaten like a rag doll. Penny seemed to like the Evans family and Willona, but mom tried to keep her from them. You would think Ms. Gordon had a drinking problem or something. But no, she just felt taking her frustration out on Penny.

Child abuse is a serious issue and often times it does not stem from drug or alcohol usage. The best thing about Good Times was the fact that writers were able to have controversial storylines and not have the characters turn preachy at the end of the show with a lecture to the audience. That is a skill that many writers should take note of.

I didn't find those episodes boring at all. They were the best of the lousy season 5.

The show was supposed to be a comedy...While watching them as a child I may have realized I didn't have it so bad...I must admit the iron scene had an effect on me personally...
and being I was about nine years old...and levelheaded....Seems to me it was not appropriate for the kind of show it was...
When you got a goofy kid running around screaming DYNOMITE you shouldn't go that far the other way..
