View Full Version : Laverne and Shirley was spinned off because Fred Silverman was constantly pushing

Gary Marshall to come up with another show since Happy Days was doing so well on Tuesday Nights. Gary told Silverman that he didn't want to do another because he was happy with Happy Days. But Fred Silverman kept insisting he do another show saying things like-"We need another hit". First silverman wanted to take Fonzie out of Happy Days and make him a blue collar mechanic. And Gary said it's no way I''m taking Fonzie out of Happy days because he is half the premise of Happy Days and a great contrast to Richie. So Gary Marshall finally agreed to do another show and said let's make the blue collar workers women instead of men and then Laverne and Shirley was given the 8:30pm Timeslot. Marshall was also not too thrilled that ABC moved L&S to Thursday Nights in the 1979-80 season because he always felt Happy Days flowed well into Laverne and Shirley when they aired back to back.

Very interesting, and I agree that Happy Days flowed well into Laverne & Shirley. I hated when they switched nights.

I guess HD flowed well into L&S because they both were in the same city-lol From one side of the track at 8pm to the other side at 8:30pm-lol

It's a wonder they never ran into each other, with the exception of the occasional crossover episodes.

How come Richie & the guys never dropped into the pizzeria to bowl a game or that the girls never stopped by Arnold's to say hi??

I think Carmine came to Arnolds with Fonzie. As a Matter of fact that's wrong, no L&S characters never went to Arnold's during the crossovers

We know that, he was saying that the L&S cast members never went to Arnold's or the HD cast members never went to the Pizzeria

What I meant is that they all lived in the same town and I don't know how big or small Milwaukee is, but it stands to reason they'd hang out every now and then or run into each other. Just one of my anal observations!

That doesn't count because that was before they got their own show

There was really no need for any crossovers, because both shows were hits.

I think they crossover because both shows were set in the same city and Fonzie and Richie had already met L&S before they got their own show

True, but a lot of crossovers happen to promote a show. Neither needed any promotion.

Well Fonzie did help launch L&S because he appeared in the first 3 or 4 eps of season 1. So I guess they did that because they didn't know if L&S was going to be a hit or not. But like you said, it was silly for these shows to crossover 3 years after L&S made it's debut-lol

I always enjoyed the crossover episodes. L&S was unique because it was the one spin-off show that was even more popular at the time then the parent show. I don't think another spin-off show has ever been #1 in the ratings.

Yeah that maybe true, the highest a spinoff came to #1 was A Different world in the late 80's when it finished #2

Michael McKean & David Lander were friends w/Penny & her-then husband Rob Reiner (who was Mike on All In The Family). David was Rob's college roommate. Penny asked MM & DL to audition for the show. It's in David's autobiography. It's on Amazon, it's a great book
