View Full Version : Nationalities/backgrounds you've been mistaken for

people always have trouble figuring out my nationality because of my last name. i'm italian, portuguese, and lithuanian and my last name is italian. but people usually think my last name sounds french so they assume i'm either french or french-canadian. but the italians and the french are pretty close, even some of the words in both languages look alike.

i also have some arab friends who think i look lebanese. i don't think so though, but it could be due to my dark hair and dark eyes. i've also been told i look irish.

what about you guys? i know people usually don't try guessing people's ethnic backgrounds, but what have you been mistaken for? anything that surprises you that people could see?

I'm Filipino, but a lot of people think I look Mexican. One kid also asked me if I was Samoan.

Mexican!!! IV'e been asked, are you Mexican, or are you part Mexican, many times. Even had a few members here ask me that. I was even asked to join the Mexican Mafia in the 7th grade. And that's not a joke either. Another reason is because I live in a mostly mexican neighborhood, and so I guess I look Mexican enough for everyone to actually believe it. Iv'e also had a couple people think I was Russian.

I get mistaken for being Hispanic all the time. I've had people come up to me and start to speak spanish and when I tell that I don't speak spanish, they'll say "oh" and start talking in english.

Asian, actually...I'm actually Estonian, but I guess people think I look Asian? I dunno. I've gotten that comment a few times now. I have dark hair, pale skin, and light blue eyes, so I'm really not sure how this comparison works :happyface

People are always saying I look Mexican in this photo. I can kind of see it, but not much. Btw, this photo's like three years old.

I'm not really mistaken for any particular nationality, people are just completely floored when they find out I'm Portuguese because by looking at me, you really could never guess  I have very light skin and very light colored hair and Portuguese people usually have dark colored hair and darker skin.

You know why I think it is that I thought you were Jewish actually?? Because there's a member here who is Jewish who you've always reminded me alot of, and sometimes I just get the two of you confused. But regardless of whether your Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, or whatever, the important thing is that you're an awesome person. That's all that really matters. ;)

A few people have insinuated that I look Native American.

By "insinuated" I mean making quick yet bigoted remarks. A couple of weeks ago I showed my brother a picture from my dad's side of the family, and he said that the people in it looked Indian. I'd post it but it's faded (although you can make out the faces).

Here's a picture of my Aunt Ellen and my Uncle Bob, who was one of my dad's dad's two brothers. He does look Italian here (anyone agree?)

I am not a typical Mexican-/Hispanic-looking person. I have light skin, dark hair, and light eyes. You know - I look like Snow White, basically. Here in New Mexico, light-skinned people are named gringos or as "white girl" or "white boy." Some of my maternal Mexican family have called me a "white girl." I look more like my Spanish side than my Mexican side of my heritage.

Little Mel, yeah, I could see how you could be mistaken for Hispanic in that photo you posted of yourself.

This guy actually once came up to me and asked "Do you speak English?" because he thought I was from Italy.

When I was younger I was constantly mistaken for being mexican because of my natural dark hair. And people ask why I now die it to lighter tones of brown, and sometimes bleached.

Lol I feel that way around my dad's side of the family. My cousins are taught Italian in the friggan kindergarten and are fluent in it yet I'm half Italian and I don't know one word of it.

I am Latina but my skin is 'too fair' for being one (one of my former bosses said so). I get confused with being European and no one can figure out my accent either.

Over the past few decades I've been mistaken for Jewish. I doubt that any of my ancestors were of the Jewish religion, or of Middle Eastern ancestry.

I've had more than a few instances of people thinking I was of Middle Eastern ancestry, apparently because I have a fairly dark complexion. Hair quite a dark brown.

Last summer I walked past a hot blonde who was in her early 20s, who was sitting in a car parked outside the convenience store near my house. She said "Ah so" as I passed her, meaning that I looked Asian to her.
