My question is about the song"The First Cut Is The Deepest".
I realise there is a fairly recent version of this song, sang by a female artist. But musicians Keith Hampshire and Rod Stewart each have their own version as well.
I recall hearing both versions from the latter two on the radio back in the 1970s.

So my question is,who was the original singer of this song?
Keith Hampshire or Rod Stewart?

I believe it to be Keith Hampshire.Am I right?

Cat Stevens is the composer of the song and he recorded it on his 1970 LP World Of Cat Stevens.

Keith Hampshire charted with the song in April of 1973 peaking at #70.
Rod Stewart's version charted in February of 1977 peaking at #21.

Also, the aforementioned female artist is Sheryl Crow. The song is included in 2 versions on her greatest hits cd as a "new" song a couple years back.
