View Full Version : Real Annoyed Trading
tdubel 07-02-2006, 11:26 AM Not casting stones, but I have am real annoyed b/c of a recent trade.
Scenario, as you all know, I will trade with about anyone, but lately, my trades have been few and with a few long time trading partners only b/c of my time and schedule. Anyhow, I was contacted by somebody looking for M Squad and Boston Blackie. For those who don't know, these are 1950s tv that is only available from Film prints, NOT television. therefore, quality would be a 7 or 8 and as for stuff being in "order", forget it. It has taken me 15 years to assemble both sets and only 1 is complete (M Squad). Anyhow, I was contacted, not really anything they had I was dying for, but I put together a list to make it a swap. All they asked was whether I had the shows, I said yes, have M Squad complete and BB near complete> Trade goes fine, both sides arrive, then I get an email voicing complaints that the M Squad is not in "order" and that BB is not complete.
Now, ask me why I am annoyed???????? I think anybody who has ever traded with me knows I give an honest assessment of what I got. AND they also know I don't care about menus or "order", while both are nice, I am a realist and always go for the highest quality I can find. Am I overreacting here? or is this why I don't take on new trading partners. Any thoughts?

Then all they have a right to expect is to get M Squad complete and BB near complete. The other person is free to re-author M Squad and put it in order at any time they so choose.
debwalsh 07-02-2006, 12:43 PM If in order was a concern big enough to trigger a complaint, they should have asked first before agreeing to the trade. And if you told them BB wasn't complete, what the heck are they complaining about that you told the truth? Oy!

Interesting post as I, some 6 mos. back traded you for the same two sets. I asked and you told me what to expect and I made the decision to trade. Eventually I had the M squads converted and there was no problem with the Blackie's The point is you told me what to expect and there were no surprises. That's how trades should always be.

Lamont 07-02-2006, 06:46 PM i understand your frustrations there tdubel
i can say that i trade you for both sets and was very happy with the outcome--- both of them are EXACTLY the way you described
all sets are NOT going to be perfect, sometimes the quality is the best you can get b/c its an old show with an old film transfer--- and u cannot expect digitial quality of a 50 year old print transfer
menus? of course we all love them, but if its that big a deal the other party needs to ask first--- it is NOT your duty to tell them GUESS WHAT THE MENUS ARE NOT SPECIAL or such ---- as long as u r upfront with quality and completeness (WHICH TDUBEL ALWAYS IS!) then any other questions are the other partys repsonsibility to ask
you did nothing wrong and yes, ive been down that road to before and its a no win situation, u cannot do anything to make them happy if they simply are looking for reasons to complain
JOEY1727 07-02-2006, 08:23 PM i have traded with him a few times and he always been honest with me,and will fix any problems.people will be people..
Dragonbear 07-02-2006, 09:38 PM Sometimes people get spoiled with a lot of the more recent sets that are
easy to have in order and with neat little menus and sing and dance.
If someone isn't familiar with the history of a show they might just assume
all it takes is to take it from DVD to dvd, or even more taking it from VHS
to DVD. It would boggle their mind to know how long it took to get say
your blackie set or probably most of lilhaves serials set.
People will also gripe if things aren't exactly they want it. If it was that
important, they could also take the set themselves, import the files
and make their own set with menus and everything. i've done it, it's
very possible if someone wants to take the time.
you're not overreacting at all. Someone just assumed something that wasn't there.
savageamusement 07-03-2006, 03:56 AM Sounds slightly ungrateful
Or in the least, only seeing the negative.
Unless they asked specifically for complete, in order-
They shouldn't just assume.
You aren't Columbia House- after all
Communicating your wants, is just as important as filling them.
It isn't exactly fair for me to ask for 50 discs of Saturday Night Live nad then say OH these have commericals?
Phooey.
We need to give our reqeusts clearly, in order to not be dispaointed- Quality, Grade media, Speed Media, commericals, order
Be as picky as you want, but be it upfront.
Sorry to hear your frustrated- and that for a rare show all they found was a reason to complain.
Id think reauthoring it is worth the time, and problaby far easier, then getting it and putting it to disc in the first place.
But I am a glass half full kinda girl
T-Greg 07-03-2006, 01:04 PM Tom is one of the most honest people I've ever dealt with, so I know whatever was said to the other trader was as accurate as could be said about the sets. If someone does not mention anything about needing the episodes in order, I don't see what the problem is. The fact that there was nothing Tom wanted from the other trader, but he still worked something out despite that, tells me the other trader is just ungrateful.
