View Full Version : The WB Ends Sept. 17, 2006 ... Will Go Out With a Bang!

The Frog is planning one last hurrah before it croaks.
The WB will sign off the air forever on Sunday, Sept. 17, by rebroadcasting the pilot episodes of several of its signature skeins, including "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer," "Felicity" and "Dawson's Creek."

In addition to the pilots, Frog plans to fill its final night with a bevy of classic promos and image campaigns from the WB's 11-year history. There'll also be a final tribute reel featuring the hundreds of thesps who've appeared on WB skeins over the years.
Such a farewell is unprecedented: When one-time fourth network DuMont signed off the air for the last time in 1956, it did so with little fanfare -- and with very little coverage.

Because the Frog's final bow will take place on a Sunday -- a night on which the WB airs programming from 5-10 p.m. -- net's blowout bye-bye will be a full five hours.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2006
The WB's Final Bow
Pilot Episodes From Classic WB Series
5:00 p.m. Felicity
6:00 p.m. Angel
7:00 p.m. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (2 hours)
9:00 p.m. Dawson's Creek

Some shows that would seem a natural for the last night -- such as "Smallville" and "7th Heaven" -- won't appear because they'll live on at the merged WB-UPN, which is called the CW.

The CW premiere Monday, September 18. UPN's final bow is Friday, Sept. 15, but it has not announced if any celebration will take place.

Sounds great! Thanks for letting us know. Especially excited about the 2 hour Buffy pilot. Understandable why 7th Heaven and Smallville don't get airings, but why no Charmed? Lasted longer than all the other series being rebroadcasted.

Not really sure what UPN would have to celebrate though lol.

Why isn't Charmed going to be on? The Charmed pilot used to hold the record for the highest ratings of any WB pilot beating the likes of Felicity, Buffy and Dawson's Creek and yet it isn't being shown. I'm glad the WB is going now. Felicity, Buffy, Dawson, Gilmore Girls and Smallville are pretty much the only shows the WB ever seemed to care about and promote.

Uh, they didn't care about Charmed, yet kept renewing it year after year, even after it lost its spark?

They had the sense to cancel DC before it got really horrible, even though the last two seasons were nothing to write home about.

I'm really sad to see the WB go because they were one of the few networks to make shows that none of the other networks would do. Mainly because the other networks felt those shows couldn't get the huge numbers they needed. The WB had some high quality shows over its 11 year history but in the past couple of years the quality has gone down. Given time I beleive the quality would have came back but that has we know will never happen.

The WB always renewed Charmed because they knew it had good ratings, but its obvious that they had no interest in the show from the point of view of promotion etc.

That is going to be terrific news for fans who don't care much about the WB. "Charmed" is still one of my favorites. For those of you in the NYC area, WPIX-TV will drop the WB11 name and it's going to become CW11 by September 18th. In addition WWOR-TV still has My9 on and it's not going to be on the air until September 15th to become My Network TV.

i think The WB should do a Week long event, celebrating their Network. More of their shows, like Charmed, Reba, WILAY, Zoe, Unhappily, Sister Sister, etc. This one night thing sucks...I will be watching though. :).....And they should have montages and perhaps the cast of shows talking during commercial breaks.

i wish they would show the pilots of Popular, Roswell, Popstars, Maybe It's Me (not a big hit, but DEFINETLY a critical hit and a wb signature) and Sabrina......

but oh well...... i'll be tuning in as long as my local station airs this..... we don't have a WB network, we have a UPN affialiate that sometimes airs WB shows......

Can't wait to see the old promos' used to LOVE those "dubba dubba dubba be"

You know what show i used to like "Zoe, Duncan, Jack and Jane" aka "Zoe..." aka "Zoe"... that launched the career of Selma Blair... great show.

Oh I so agree with you on this. Popular and Roswell were such great series before the wb meddled with them. When they made Popular conform to the formula of standard teen dramas like Dawson's Creek, it became horrible and not only did they not pick up new viewers but they alienated the original ones. Popular was a satire on the teen drama genre; it worked best when it was mocking the conventions and subverting the cliches of typical teen dramas. Roswell was another show that suffered under WB's meddling. The WB forced it to become more sci-fi like Buffy but Roswell worked best when it was about the inter-relationships between these aliens and humans and how the aliens struggled to fit in. Another great show was "Gross Pointe" which also poked fun at teen soaps. I also loved "Maybe It's Me", such a quirky and unique show. The WB had no idea how to market and produce shows that were unique, different, and in some cases, irreverent. Thats why they failed.. they constantly tried to emulate the success of Dawson's Creek and Buffy instead of developing new ideas.

It's funny here too. WATL/ch.36 started calling themselves "myATLtv" at least two weeks before MNTV lauched. WUPA/ch.69 has been calling themselves "CW Atlanta" for at least 3 weeks also.

Oh well, nothing I can do about it. I'll have to check to see if Buffy and Angel are still in reruns.

Earlier tonight, I watched the farewell to the WB Network. It has the cast of "Charmed", "Buffy", "Dawson's Creek" and other WB shows after 11 years on the air. And then, all of a sudden after "Dawson's Creek" was over, I saw the WPIX logo history from the first station in 1948, the "11 Alive" logo from 1976 (as shown on my avatar) and then into 2000 was the WB11 and finally, the WB11 is now the CW11. That's a clever name of the new look and the new logo right brfore the start of the new CW11 "News at Ten". I missed the WB. :(

I kept getting all choked up when they were showing those musical montages of all their stars.....I also liked that Commercial with Cheyanne from "Reba" and Lana from "Smallville", with Michigan J. Frog. That was funny.

The wierd thing is, I can remember where I was when Buffy, Felcity, Angel, and Dawson aired, LOL. Sooo long ago. 8 Years since Dawson and Felcity, and almost 10 since Buffy. Wow. The WB will be missed....The CW will not be the same, and I have a feeling it won't be around for 11 years either....But that's just me.

i agree... it's funny because i was at the end of elementary school when the WB debuted, but i fondly remember each of these shows debuting and they were huge parts of my life.... In fact, "Dawson's Creek" and "Felicity" were such favorites of mine that i used to tell all my friends not to call me AT ALL when they were on... and one of the "big" moments in my life is when a friend called on wed night and i actually said "oh forget felicity, we can talk" it was a BIG moment in my life.....

of all the WB shows i think my favorite one is "Popular", it just left such a big impact on me and i actually still watch all the episodes to this day on DVD. i really wish it had gotten a little bit more time to catch on... i think had they left it alone, not changed it into a typical teen drama and let it continue to be satire it could have been a bigger hit.

Your definately right about Popular. The WB wanted it to be more of a Dawson-type show, and they really ruined everything. I stil llike Season 2, and we saw that 1st Season whackyness return in later episodes, but by then, they lost their viewers. Moving it to Friday nights didn't help it either.

ItA... I've always wondered why networks feel the need to change things when a show is getting great reviews and is getting moderate-to-almost-great ratings! But you're right the move to Friday nights was not a smart one, and pairing it with Sabrina and Popstars made little sense, those shows were not at all compatiable, they would have been smarter to have either left popular on Thursdays with Gilmore Girls, which by than had become a critcally accalimed, almost hit... or moving it to either pair it with Felicity or Dawson's which would have been more compatiable.... imho....

Personally, I think The Wb only kept Popular for filler on their schedule. They didn't care about it that much. Afterall, it was a satire of their Network, and I don't think they killed it that much- The real reason they changed the show, IMHO.....I think they only renewed it for filler, and threw it on Friday nights, when they knew nobody would watch.

Thanks for the video, Brent! I've seen the last two minutes of the WB sign off right before the WPIX-TV logo montage came on with the history of various logos from its WPIX days from the beginning in 1948 right up until 2000 when it was the WB11 and the new station ID for WPIX-TV was born. It's now being called the CW11. Same channel, new name, same great shows. WPIX-TV did a great job of getting rid of the WB11 logo to become the new home of CW. WWOR-TV had already started its "My Network TV" two weeks ago under the new station affiliate My9 after they dropped off the UPN name to put My9 a few months before the launch. CW is a new network featuring the shows that you've seen on both UPN and WB which it combines into one network. Great to see the CW off and running. Will see what happens if the two new networks are doing well.

"For 11 years...You brought us into your homes...

We made you smile...and tuggedat your hearts...

And now, it's time to say goodbye.

From all of us at The WB

Thank you"

I liked this message at the end. I just can't let go of The WB.
