ION Media Networks Announces Programming Agreement for Extensive Line-up of Theatricals and Television Series from Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution

“Superman III” To Kick Off Schedule Saturday, July 1st

(West Palm Beach, FL – June 27, 2006) – ION Media Networks, Inc. (AMEX: ION) and Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution announced today a comprehensive programming deal, providing ION with the rights to broadcast popular movies and classic television series from Warner Bros.’ extensive library on its flagship i television network, reaching over 90 million homes.

“We are very pleased about this important programming alliance,” said Brandon Burgess, CEO of ION Media Networks. “Given its depth as a content supplier, Warner Bros. is a natural fit for our network, as our current viewers look to us for classic, family-oriented TV fare. We hope to expand this relationship over time, tapping into Warner Bros.’ diverse library to broaden our network’s content appeal and demographic positioning.”

Under the deal, ION has acquired the broadcast rights to a number of Warner Bros.’ most popular television series and movies. Series include classic shows such as “Welcome Back, Kotter,” “Chico and the Man,” “Scarecrow & Mrs. King,” “Mama’s Family,” “Alice” and “Wonder Woman,” and more recent hits including “The Wonder Years,” “Growing Pains,” “Perfect Strangers” and “The Wayans Bros,” among others.

The vast selection of movie titles available to ION includes Academy Award winners for Best Picture “Amadeus” and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” and other hits, such as ”All the President’s Men,” "Police Academy 2", "Giant," "Oh God," "Rio Bravo," “Dead Ringers,” “Dog Day Afternoon,” “Rebel Without a Cause,” “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “Superman,” “Network,” “Shaft,” “Victor/Victoria,” “Empire of the Sun” and “Beetlejuice.”

The stable of talent represented in the deal is truly stellar, and includes Johnny Depp, Robin Williams, Tom Hanks, Clint Eastwood, Nicole Kidman, Al Pacino, James Dean, Paul Newman, John Wayne, Harrison Ford, Jack Nicholson, Marlon Brando, Mel Gibson, Dustin Hoffman, Denzel Washington, Elijah Wood, Whoopi Goldberg, Charlton Heston, Meryl Streep, Steve Martin and of course, Bugs Bunny. Directors include master filmmakers such as Alfred Hitchcock, Oliver Stone, Sergio Leone, Blake Edwards, Steven Spielberg, Tim Burton and George Lucas.

“We're delighted to be in business with the new i network and are confident that they will reap the proven audience-building benefits of popular features and TV series to drive ratings, attract sponsors and build the network's brand," said Eric Frankel, President of Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution. “With our robust library of titles and ION’s large network of TV stations, this is clearly a win-win situation for everyone involved.”

Targeting its portfolio of content toward the i network’s current family-oriented television audiences, ION will kick off its Warner Bros. movie schedule with “Superman III” on Saturday, July 1st, coinciding with the weekend’s motion picture release of “Superman Returns.”

ION will begin scheduling the Warner Bros. television product in August on i.

It debuted tonight. The first two episodes aired. Haven't seen those in YEARS. Almost brought a tear to my eye (ALMOST!). I'm glad it's back on TV.

For some reason, they aren't airing the first Christmas episode. It was scheduled, but I noticed on my TiVo that it wasn't there anymore. I wonder why they decided to cut this episode?

It was scheduled for this Friday at 10, but ION is airing some Fabric of Time special, so now the episodes are all pushed back a day. So the Christmas one is now Monday at 10. Listings should be up to date soon.

Yeah!!!! I was hoping they weren't going to skip the holiday episodes and then only air them at Christmas. Now, if they'd only release this show on DVD, I'd be a happy woman! :)

One thing I did notice on the show last night...

I'm the same age as Kevin was during this show. And really, it's pretty much like it was for me, back then. But I did notice that some of the boys were wearing jeans. We weren't allowed to do that. I remember when I started 9th grade, we were allowed (and this is public schools in the midwest) to wear matching pantsuits (they were this foamy-polyester stuff). I think it was a year or so later (I'd have to check my yearbooks), that were were allowed to wear jeans! By the time I was a senior, anything went...especially hotpants! And man, they were short, short, short. Our dresses were also short. You'd think they would have rather we covered up with pants rather than wearing those dresses that barely covered our rears. lol

So my husband, who was a senior back then at the same school (I was a freshman), never once wore jeans to school. But I suppose things may have been more hip out in California, or wherever this show is supposed to take place.

I enjoy That 70's Show, but it in no way resembles what the 70's were like for me.

pavanbadal, thanks for the info! :)

The main reason why the show has yet to be released to DVD is because of the music and the rights for use. When a series goes to DVD, a lot of times they don't have to worry about the music, as it's in house stuff. The Wonder Years has such an awesome soundtrack... it would cost thousands of dollars to use. Sure, they could strip all the music out and use generic stuff, but it wouldn't have the same feeling as the original. I'm guessing this is why they never released it, knowing that it wouldn't sell with the replaced music.

Coronaboy....

I'll bet you're right...about the music. And it wouldn't be the same without the music. The music and narration really made this a great series.
