On many of my episodes on some of the season sets the laugh track is missing. I know for sure on the episodes where Opie kills the mother bird and then on another one where Barney moves out of his boarding house. And then I think it's also missing on a few of the next season. Does anyone else have this problem? I was disappointed.

Paramount is now replacing the two defective Season 4 discs that do not have laugh tracks in four episodes. Here's how to get yours replaced for FREE!
Remove the proof of purchase tab from the 4th season box. It's the top flap inside the spine of the box that is revealed when you open it up. You don't have to remove the whole flap, but be sure to cut off enough to show it is clearly a proof-of-purchase tab. Mail the tab with a letter requesting the replacement discs to:
Paramount Home Entertainment Customer Service
The Andy Griffith Show Fourth Season Replacement Discs
5555 Melrose Avenue
Hollywood California 90038
In addition to enclosing the original proof of purchase tab, include your name, mailing address and phone number in the letter. Do NOT send the discs themselves. Allow 6 weeks for the two replacement discs (disc 1 and 2) to be sent to you. (I got mine in ten days.)

ok. I'll do that. I'm in Europe for the summer, but I'll do it as soon as I get home.

Um, you actually miss the laugh-track?

Well, after watching the show for over 25 years WITH a laugh track, it seems a little weird without it. Also, the show has been edited to allow for the laughter. Those brief pauses in between jokes turn into awkward silence.

.....Paramount used a "master copy" of those episodes- ones that CBS primarily used for foreign dubbing in the international market. In the case of "Opie the Birdman", however, a lack of "audience reaction" really wouldn't be out of place, considering the seriousness of the situation in the episode.
I've seen an episode of "I DREAM OF JEANNIE" on 'Nick At Nite' in the '90s that was shown without its laugh track {"Never Put a Genie On A Budget"}, which was dubbed from a "master copy" and had the same "awkward pauses" inbetween the 'funny dialogue', which was quite different. Eventually, the episode was shown with its laugh track restored on TV LAND.

Not to beat this missing laugh track thing to death, BUT...
On the "corrected" Season 4 DVDs, the laugh track stops at the 18 minute mark in both "A Sermon For Today" and "A Black Day For Mayberry."
It's somewhat possible (but not likely) that there is no more "added laughter" in Sermon at that point, but there definitely should be laughter over the epilogue in Black Day when Andy catches Barney giving away the secret of the gold truck a second time.
