View Full Version : Redd Foxx Look-a-like contest rubbed me the wrong way...
Ireneparalegal 06-19-2006, 07:58 PM I just could not get into that episode because it seemed like the writers could not come up with something better...i know it's a t.v. show and so forth, but let's get real, did Fred look like Redd Foxx??? of course he did. It was HIM. whose big idea was it to have an episode of Fred entering a look-a-like contest to see if he looks like "HIMSELF"????? Are we (the audience) so gullible and naive that we are to believe that the characters don't see that he LOOKS JUST LIKE HIM??? I hope you all know what I mean.
I can see if the character of Fred entered a BB King look-a-like contest or someone like that.
TV Knowledge Fan 06-19-2006, 08:02 PM ...that 1973 "HERE'S LUCY" episode where "Lucy Carter" entered a similar contest and met-- LUCILLE BALL.
It was just as awkward as Redd Foxx's turn on "SANFORD AND SON".
Probably the BEST example of this kind of episode is where "Mork" met Robin Williams on "MORK & MINDY". Mork's musings about celebrities at the end, where he mentions John Lennon....is chilling.
Mr. Television 06-19-2006, 08:03 PM What made me laugh was that the other characters couldn't see the resemblance. And he only won the contest because him and Redd both fell asleep.

The one about his Will
Brian Damage 06-19-2006, 11:40 PM This concept has been done many times. As early as the 50's when on the Honeymooners, Ralph and Ed met Jackie Gleason and Art Carney.

I remember the one with Gleason and Carney, but I missed those with Redd
Foxx and Robin Williams (or don't remember them anyway).

I'm not Solomon, but I found this episode to be one of the worst. Along with this one, The Earthquake and Fred's Church fall into the 3 worst.

catlover79 05-28-2007, 08:07 PM This one was probably my least favorite ep of S&S.

TV Tropes lists this under their "Celebrity Paradox" (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/CelebrityParadox/LiveActionTV) page. There was also an episode of The Nanny where Fran Fine (https://thenannytv.fandom.com/wiki/Fran_Fine) "meets" (https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/fran-dreschers-fiercest-moments-on-the-nanny/) Fran Drescher.

For whatever the reasons, Frank Nelson (AKA the "Yes Man" (https://youtu.be/1FQL_SxCA-s) from the old Jack Benny Show) was a recurring guest in the latter seasons, including the "Hawaiian Connection" trilogy (https://youtu.be/zqASrifJy4Y?t=221) as an airplane pilot. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Frank Nelson wasn't funny, but I just sense that Nelson and his schtick could've only worked in the Saul Turteltaub-Bernie Orenstein (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=343962) produced seasons, where the comedy was much broader and stupider.
