From the San Gabriel Valley Tribune web site:

The quintessential song and dance man, Dick Van Dyke, was honored at “A Celebration of Caring, Celebrity Toast,” the annual luncheon to benefit Actors & Others for Animals. Held at the Universal Hilton, the event raised $100,000 for animal welfare programs.

A cavalcade of show-biz veterans was on hand to toast Van Dyke, who noted it was the first time he had ever been a “toastee.”

“My main charitable interest is working with the folks at the Midnight Mission in downtown L A.There, we're kind of in the same business trying to save people who fall through the cracks just as you prevent animals from falling through the cracks.

Surveying the star-studded dais, he seized the opportunity to scold young Hollywood. “Everyone up here is gray,” he said. "When I attend fundraisers around town, everyone is gray. We're going to be in trouble if we don't encourage more young actors to get involved with these causes.”

A detailed video chronicle of his long career included tributes from Michele Lee, Ben Stiller, Debbie Reynolds, Peter Marshall, Susan Blakely, Stepfanie Kramer, Carl Reiner, Robert Wagner and Rose Marie.

Taking turns at the podium were president Earl Holliman and vice-president Jo Anne Worley, along with Monty Hall, Fred Willard, Bryan Cranston, Mike Connors, Elayne Boosler, Steve Lawrence, Charlotte Rae, Mitzi Gaynor, Dick Martin, Nancy Dussault and Loretta Swit.

The irrepressible Tim Conway summed it all up by noting with his trademark deadpan, “Dick is being honored because he has a dog.”
