I was just wondering in the movie 'Stephen king's 'IT', did Richard Thomas grow his hair long for the part of ('Billy Denbourgh') or was(the pony tail) an extention?

I heard something about IT on the radio the other day but I didn't catch it all though just remember hearing John Ritters name. Is there gonna be a remake or something?
