View Full Version : Should the Evans have still been eating OATMEAL in season 6?
TVFactFan 06-15-2006, 09:13 AM That was just ridiculous to still be eating oatmeal for breakfast 6 seasons later which was probably one of the reasons viewers lost interest during that time. It was time to show that the Evans have improves somewhat and were able to eat something a little different besides oatmeal
gilligan fanatic 06-15-2006, 09:14 AM "good by Oatmeal hello cream of wheat"

nerrad 06-15-2006, 11:31 AM My memory is bad. Were they still eating oatmeal by then? If so, I wonder what Keith felt like.:D
TVFactFan 06-15-2006, 06:37 PM My memory is bad. Were they still eating oatmeal by then? If so, I wonder what Keith felt like.:D
Yup, they atleast could have had cereal-lol
Ireneparalegal 06-15-2006, 06:41 PM There were episodes where they mentioned other food items. Oatmeal wasn't thee breakfast of champions anymore.
retrochick9 06-15-2006, 09:18 PM Yup, they atleast could have had cereal-lol
I was thinking that too. Maybe they couldn't afford the milk, lol.
Ireneparalegal 06-15-2006, 09:22 PM they had pancakes and other stuff in season 6...besides, it didn't matter, with Thelma doing the cooking, it all ended up crap anyways.
Brieannas21 06-15-2006, 11:00 PM Oatmeal is filling so that's prob why they ate it all the time. Hard to feed a family of 5 on eggs, bacon and toast every morning
Ireneparalegal 06-15-2006, 11:02 PM but solomon is stating abt the last season. by then they were eating or at least mentioning eating other breakfast foods.
TVFactFan 06-15-2006, 11:09 PM they had pancakes and other stuff in season 6...besides, it didn't matter, with Thelma doing the cooking, it all ended up crap anyways.
They had pancakes in season 5 not 6. When Florida returned to the show, they went back to having oatmeal

And weren't anyone hardly working in the 6th season. So who do you think was buying most of the food? Flo, she was the one who had a steady job almost all the way through the 6th season.

Keith worked. Flo worked. Michael had part-time jobs; they paid low income rent; JJ i am sure was getting unemployment.

Keith didn't always have a Job I doubt that Michael little money went towards food and I don't remember JJ getting unemployment. I personally think Flo was the main bread winner in that family and she did all of the food shopping. I don't recall anyone coming back from the store with Flo other then Wilona. And if Keith, Michael or JJ wanted pancakes or Waffles then they should have gotten off their butts and bought it or cooked it.
So like in my house when I was growing up, You ate what mama bought or you don't eat at all

JJ worked and was laid off. he gets unemployment. Flo was a bus driver. steady full-time job. Keith was a cab driver, i am sure he got some tips. Michael what amt he brought in most def went towards food, so that is more money than in earlier seasons. Thelma even mentioned a part-time job. They had $$$ or else how did they save up for a house??

I would think that the money that Michael would have made would have went towards his school, being in college isn't cheap you still have books and even if you get a scholorship and most of the time your scholorship won't even cover the whole tutition. We never ever saw Thelma going to anyones place of employment, everytime we saw her she was at home in the kitchen or on the couch. And with JJ, you only get unemployment until all of what they took out your check runs out. Also just because a person is fired or laid off doesn't mean that they'll get unemployment, it's all up the the employer and a lot of the time they will fight to keep you from getting it. And Flo was still the only person who went food shopping.

I'm no where near the poverty level like the Evans' and I still eat oatmeal almost every morning for breakfast. Not only is it filling, but it's loaded with fiber. I see nothing wrong with eating one certain thing for breakfast every morning.

I agree with you, but the show made it seem like they had to eat oatmeal because they couldn't afford anything else.

Exactly. in the words of Dee Thomas: "Pay attention to a person"
i think the oatmeal bit was to keep on dragging those "bad cooking" jokes. Stupid. Besides, I had mentioned a long time ago when this question was asked in a thread before, just because we saw the Evan's once a week eat oatmeal doesn't mean they ate it everyday for breakfast. Maybe when James was around since he was the only one working, but in the later seasons with Thelma, Flo and Keith working, Michael working part-time (he only needed to pay for school books ONCE, not every week) then that income is better than when James was around. Not to mention Flo probably receiving social security death benefits from Carl. See, not everything has to be mentioned on the show for it to be true. That is tooooo much time and info for the writers to be dealing with. As for JJ collecting unemployment insurance, no company in their right mind will deny him benefits if they laid him off. He wasn't fired. He wasn't a bad employee. He was laid off. That means there isn't any work. Therefore, unless the company wants to get in trouble with Fair housing and employment, they will give him his $$$$$. Shoot, I QUIT TWO JOBS IN MY LIFETIME and received unemployment benefits.

A company doesn't HAVE to give you your unemployment. Some companies will fight to keep that money. If they denied your claim then you can appeal their decision to try to get your unemployment. Also if a person quits a job I don't see how that person could get unemployment since they voluntarily quit. I've had to sit through A LOT of ex-employee's appeal hearings since I've been working here, and I've had to write many appeals to others cases. And your right about Michael’s book, but there are still other things that he would have to buy for school. Also the little job he had delivering papers prob didn't pay much at all. I could see him chipping in on the rent a little every month but I don't see him chipping in on the groceries.
And my point is even though Florida worked part time I could see her being the main bread winner in the family, and she was the only person who did the food shopping. So whatever she bought and cooked they ate. If they wanted pancakes, bacon, eggs and whatnot they could have gotten up off their ass’s and cooked it. But I do remember in one episode where they were eating eggs, bacon, and toast.

LOL, I can't help it, long reply’s is what makes SO discussion’s fun. It would be boring if everyone’s answers were short and not detailed (Sometimes detailed)

AWWWW I feel your pain, I remember when my wrist was all casted up and having to work and type with one hand. Taking a bath was the worse, having someone help you take a bath for two months isn't as fun as it may seem

Yeah but you have OPTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, The Evans didn't have options

surely by seasons 5 & 6 they did.
ThomasE 06-17-2006, 03:18 AM Oatmeal was economical and filling. They bought whatever was the cheapest. That stupid Borgan's grocery store hiked up everything in price.

I think the Evans had the Generic Brand of Oatmeal-lol
retrochick9 06-17-2006, 06:19 PM Maybe they only splurged on things like bacon & eggs once a week or so. Maybe their goal was to save their money for the house they wanted instead of spending the extra cash on food.

Hey, don't get your panties in a wad.....it was just a joke. I notice that there are some really die-hard fans of GT on here, including you and Solomon. I love the show too, but I don't get into it as deep as some others. But it doesn't bother me that some are more into it.....it DOES make the board interesting, I guess.

I grew up watching GT in the 70's...i seen the episodes in their entirety, not the crap they show now. besides, that's what these boards are for, to talk abt the shows, analyze them, analyze the characters, the what-if's, what would you do, etc. I don't get my panties in a wad because you tell me anything. I DON'T WEAR PANTIES...ASK ANYONE HERE...
We have had these same discussions abt GT before, these "deep discussions" are nothing new and for a forum board abt TELEVISION SITCOMS this is not unusual.

TMI
Janice Johnson 06-20-2006, 10:54 PM I've made up a meal list of what the Evanses' breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack/dessserts would be for a typical day.;)
Breakfast
Oatmeal(main meal)
Milk
Lunch
Turkey sandwich
Koolaid
Dinner
Chicken
Rice
Koolaid
Dessert/snacks
Ice cream(occasionally)

What's wrong with oat meal? It's really healthy. I eat it all the time and I'm not poor.

Nothing but it just made it sound weird they couldn't upgrade to actual meat and eggs instead of a new form of oatmeal.
