I disagree. Trust me, I grew up in the 80s, and these two were my favorite bands.

Van Halen - your classic hard rock band. Very guitar intensive, and in later days, did great keyboard work. Typical hard rock songs about girls and upbeat subjects.

Def Leppard - your classic hair metal band. Two guitars, over studioed, bubble-gum sound, many ballads, many party anthems.

Both were innovators and often imitated, but they are in different genres of hard rock. Comparing the two of these bands is like comparing a Toyota Rav 4 to a Land Rover. Both are technically considered a SUV, but they are really two distinctly different vehicles who are not comporable.
