View Full Version : Box Office Attraction
FOL85NatandMrsGRock 06-08-2006, 10:41 PM What an episode for the series huh?! Couple of comments and questions, i thought we could discuss about it. First of all, this girl was full of it all, she smoked, lied a lot, drank, and even seemed to offer herself to wally in the car on the way to the show. she even dropped out of school.
So did anbody think that she was an awfully easy flying girl, a girl who had been around a lot? Also, do you think wally was sorta being a little square or at least surprised he didn't adapt a little more to her? It was almost as if they were complete opposites yet he was pretty positive that she was a great girl.
So what are your thoughts about the episode as a whole? Was it a pretty big episode for the series? Did you think that there was a lot of things they covered in the episode that were pretty big?
craviola990 06-22-2006, 12:17 PM I want a shirt made of the frame where Wally is sitting at the bar with the beer in front of him, and the smoke is drifting up his face. That would be classic! Christian
stevea 03-19-2019, 08:45 AM Here's something I just thought of: suppose Bill Boothby or George Compton had been at Hank's Place, and saw Wally and Marlene there.
Bill comes into Ward's office next day, and says, "Say, Ward, I hope I'm not out of line here, but I saw your older son at Hank's Place last night. I think he's underage, and that you ought to know about it."
(Ward: "Well, for one thing, I guess that would explain the smoke and brew smell June found on his jacket.")
What would Ward have done?
How did Wally get served? I don't think Hank checked Wally's ID
stevea 03-19-2019, 07:08 PM Nope. When he saw Marlene, it was, "Draw two?"
Samme 03-19-2019, 07:24 PM I thought it was a great performance by Diane Sayer. As good as any guest actor ever on the show. And I'd sure enjoy hearing Tony Dow's memories of that episode.
stevea 03-19-2019, 09:15 PM It would have been interesting to have a commentary on that episode on the DVDs (which had no commentaries), maybe with Tony and Diane. (I just checked--couldn't have had Diane...she died in 2001 at age 63).
Yes, she was terrific in that episode.
Scrabjan1 03-20-2019, 09:02 AM I also enjoyed that episode as it was a breath of fresh air compared to the Beaver episodes in Season 6. The episodes where Beaver is the focal point. His acting has no inflection. Quite annoying.
Diane Sayer played the party girl to the max. She was planning to do all the bars that night with Wally (The Red Top the Birdcage) but he wasn’t up to it. Some guys would have thought maybe I should try something new and play along but he had a mind of his own and very adult. Way too adult. Wally just realized she was pathetic and would hate to see Marlene in 5 years. I guess that night she and Gus got together. Beaver treated Marlene like he was the prosecuting attorney, “Did your aunt walk you home last Saturday Miss Holmes.” I would have said what business is that of yours? I think the episode was a bit preachy but the best of Season 6.
stevea 03-20-2019, 10:13 AM Yeah it really was good. I liked it when she brushed Eddie off by suggesting he go in and watch the bunny rabbit cartoon. And Beaver playing lawyer...never thought of that. Maybe he was a Perry Mason or Sam Benedict fan.
The bar was one thing Ward didn't find out about. I still wonder what he would have done if he had. Wally was up front about the Barons and beer, so it would have been a good chance to show Wally he's trusted.
On the other hand I thought it was funny at the beginning of the Uncle Billy episode, when they were figuring out who they were going to get to stay with the boys. Huh? They have a 17 year old and they couldn't leave him in charge for a weekend? Didn't they leave him in charge 3 years before, when Beaver let the tub overflow?
Ha!--Gus and Marlene. Maybe she would have fixed him up with her aunt.
Torgo 03-20-2019, 11:16 AM Really enjoy this episode. Like seeing Wally experience a whole different way of life he's not used to.

Right, but that was just one night, and it only involved Wally cooking hamburgers for one meal.
It didn't involve breakfast the next day, lunch the next day, etc.
I didn't know Marlene died in '01... Wow she would have been 81 today.... Hard to believe, time marches on !
CosmicCharlie 03-20-2019, 07:42 PM I'm still spinning they actually did that episode LOL
a minor in a bar !
stevea 03-20-2019, 08:43 PM I didn't know Marlene died in '01... Wow she would have been 81 today.... Hard to believe, time marches on !
I didn't know it either till I looked it up. I doubt there's an adult character alive from the show. And as we've discussed in other threads, Stanley Fafara and Frank Bank have passed.
Off topic, but I watch Hazel on DVD daily (playing the same episodes as Antenna). NONE of the original cast are still with us...even Bobby Buntrock. (I guess some of the kid character actors are still around.) I'm not counting season 5, but even Lynn Borden is gone, too.
Scrabjan1 03-21-2019, 08:38 AM Well Ryan O’Neal is still kicking and was young but married. He doesn’t look too good and not in good health and a pretty lousy father. I wonder if Barbara Parkins is still among the living.

Ryan O’Neal
Leave It to Beaver (TV Series)
Tom Henderson
- Wally Goes Steady (1961) ... Tom Henderson

Right, about Ryan O'Neal and Barbara Parkins.
If you want to limit it to "adults," characters considerably older than Beaver and Wally, there are probably still some actors who played one-shot characters still living, like Lee Meriwether.
Schmoopie 09-05-2019, 03:36 AM I honestly thought that Ward was going to be downtown when Wally was in that bar with that beer and Ward would assume that he was drinking and smoking like that girl. Ugh, she was awful.
CosmicCharlie 09-05-2019, 09:23 AM what do you think the alcohol drinking age was ?
Wally MUST have been drinking as a minor ! ?
Scrabjan1 09-05-2019, 09:30 AM It would have been funny if Hank’s was Ward’s watering hole and after dinner he went there to get a highball and sees Wally.
Ward- Why Wally what are you two doing here?
Wally- Well Marlene thinks the place would be jumping and we were gonna do the town.
Eh, Dad what are you doing here?
Ward- I just stopped in to see a few friends. (Blonde bimbo walks over to Ward and puts her arm around his neck.) Hi Honey I’ve been waiting for ya. Wanna dance?
Ward - Not right now Wanda.
Ward- Say Marlene how about a spin.
Marlene- Sure Mr. C. I didn’t know you were so swinging!
(Wally dances with Wanda and she shows him a few moves.)
Charlie keeps the beers coming.
stevea 09-05-2019, 10:29 AM The blonde bimbo--perfect would be one of the fun girls from TAGS. She walks over to Ward and in that low voice says, Hiya, doll.
Scrabjan1 09-05-2019, 04:52 PM LOL!! Daphne and Skippy
stevea 09-05-2019, 05:31 PM Yeah! Daphne plays up to Ward (hello, doll), and Skippy plays up to Wally, runs her fingers thru his hair (Wally whips out his comb to neaten up), and calls him Willie. Marlene notices all this and a fight ensues.
As they're all dancing (Marlene with another guy) June walks in and starts throwing chairs. She advises anyone who's listening that she speaks jive, and tells Hank to draw one.
CosmicCharlie 09-05-2019, 05:58 PM good ol' fashion CAT Fight ! scratching, kicking, biting & hair pulling
stevea 09-05-2019, 06:20 PM It'd be great to see if somebody found some lookalike characters and produced something like that.
(June with messed up hair--egad!)
Scrabjan1 09-08-2019, 08:26 PM And don’t forget the drunk staggering out he decides to stay when he sees June but she doesn’t feel like dancing. Eddie drops in and since it’s a real swinging place he ditches the dodo he’s with and latches onto the dove, Marlene.
stevea 09-08-2019, 08:30 PM A drunk staggers out. Who is it? It's Ward!
MISST3 09-26-2019, 04:46 PM  Or maybe, it could be Andy Hadlock, the Handyman!
stevea 09-26-2019, 05:04 PM good ol' fashion CAT Fight ! scratching, kicking, biting & hair pulling
Like watching an old WWF match with the Fabulous Moolah.
MichaelMartinD 09-27-2019, 09:20 AM A drunk staggers out. Who is it? It's Ward!
That reminds me of the old Second City Television spoof of LITB (LITB thirty years later). Has anyone seen it? It's pretty disgraceful, but they do portray Ward as a drunk pouring whiskey on his cereal at breakfast.
stevea 09-27-2019, 10:01 AM I used to watch SCTV years ago, but I don't remember that. Is it on Youtube?
MichaelMartinD 09-27-2019, 10:46 AM Yes, it is. Type in "SCTV Leave It to Beaver 25th anniversary party."
stevea 09-27-2019, 10:56 AM A couple of off-topic things I remember was a regular sketch with 2 guys, I think one was Rick Moranis, called the Great White North or something like that. One of them made a call like coodalee coo coo coo.
And a guy, I think played by Joe Flaherty, was the mgr. of a fictitious TV station.
I really ought to see if this show is avail. on DVD.
FOL85NatandMrsGRock 09-11-2022, 11:36 AM Haha, you all have wild imaginations!! To throw back into one of the earlier posts in this thread about how the conversation would have gone once ward and June found out about Wally being at a bar…. That’s the conversation I want to hear!!!
CosmicCharlie 09-11-2022, 11:53 AM LOL she smoked, drank beer, hung out in bars, and kissed Wally on the LIPS (?)
June: Ward ! What is doing to my baby ?
Ward: (just smiles) !
