What is that huge birdcage-like thing at the bottom of the stairs at Shady Rest Hotel? Is it an elevator or phone booth? I don't remember seeing it used in any episodes.

It's an elevator Joe put in for looks to add class to the Hotel. Nice avatar Ronny.

yea; it's an elevator that doesn't work. In the pilot episode, Homer Bedloe (Charles Lane, who pops up sometimes on every other sitcom in the 60s every now and then! ) gets in it. Joe walks over to him and says "What are you doing in there, mister"?

Thanks everyone for your reply. I always wondered about that. Also, I just watched episode #30: Kate and the Dowager, the one where the Bradleys are trying to convice the bank president that the hotel is booked full, and one of the girls is on the phone in the corner pretending to book some rooms, but the president says he knows the phone doesn't work because Uncle Joe said he put it there for show to add some class to the place.

Hi Ronnie and all! The "elevator" was also used as a bird cage for Uncle Joes Myna Bird, and as a jail for Eustace Pockel when the sheriff went fishing and Joe was in charge of the Prisoner!
