View Full Version : FOL Cast Members in Other Roles?
Here's a question for you:
So have you seen the FOL girls and other cast members in other roles over the years and what did you think? No bashing of course. This includes pre FOL, during FOL and after FOL. I realize Lisa no longer acts, but she did do other roles before FOL.
For me, I admit I've never seen Lisa in anything else, though I would like to. I would love to see stuff from her Mouseketeer Days
Outside of her voiceover work, Mindy's most notable non FOL role for me was in the movie "The Boy Who Could Fly". I wish she'd get more roles and more lead roles.
I used to watch Kim in Living Single and I loved that she did a 180 and played a character so different from Tootie. Regine was the complete opposite of Tootie and she pulled it off well. Again, I wish I could see her more. I know she acts regularly but she seems to focus more on theatre work.
I admit I've seen Nancy the most since she's probably been on television the most over the years. She's become one of the queens of television movies. I did watch her short lived show "Can't Hurry Love" back when it was on and I caught "The Division" off and on. Some of her movies are less than thrilling, but I think "Cry For Help: Tracy Thurman Story" and "The Division" are her best work.
Oh and I also have a nostalgia love for the Nancy/Michael J. Fox tv movies from the 80's. There were two.
I've also seen Mackenzie Astin in a lot of roles here and there. I wish he was in more too.
Ireneparalegal 06-05-2006, 11:48 PM I grew up watching Lisa on the Mickey Mouse Club. Her hair was kinda like that bowl cut Kim had on FOL. It later grew longer of course. I was shocked when I first started watching FOL during its first run and I recognized that girl, Lisa. I was like WOW, she grew up and grew up very beautiful. You would have loved her how she was as a mouseketeer.

You're right about Nancy. She's also been in the sweet Chrismasy movie Comfort and Joy and the sci-fi type disaster miniseries Category 6 Day of Destruction playing as a news reporter seeking the truth(viewed by over 18 million in U.S. and possibly even more worldwide(numbers unconfirmed for worldwide viewership)). And she was also in a movie during the 90's that also featured Sean Astin(the bro. of Macanzie Astin) where Nancy's character was a college student who hung around this brainy-type female college student(I forgot the name of the movie.) And Nancy will be in a movie called WildHearts in July. So far the one movie of Nancy's I like most was The Wrong Woman in which she and Chelsea Field have a fight scene on the ground which resulted in Chelsea Fields(the bad guy) finally dieing.
And for Lisa Whelchel, I've heard she was in a movie called "Where the Red Fern Grows: Part 2(1991). And yes, it's on DVD.
Nighthawk76 06-06-2006, 12:29 PM The only cast member I have seen in anything else is Nancy McKeon. I've seen her in The Division.
Bronx_Girly 06-06-2006, 01:44 PM Not only was Lisa Welch a member of the mouseketeers, so was Julie Pierski (aka Sue Ann from season 1).
Jo_Luvs_Ketchup 06-06-2006, 04:20 PM I have seen Charlotte Rae in Different Strokes, Kim Fields in The Division and Living Single, and Mindy Cohn in The Boy Who Could Fly. They were all great! I only saw Lisa Whelchel in The Facts of Life. Now Nancy I've seen in The Love Boat, High School USA, Poison Ivy, This Child is Mine, Firefighter, Strange Voices, A Cry For Help: The Tracey Thurman Story, The Lightening Incident, Baby Snatcher, Love, Honor, and Obey: The Last Mafia Marriage, The Wrong Woman, A Mother's Gift, Can't Hurry Love, In My Sister's Shadow, Just Write, Style and Substance, Touched By An Angel, The Division, Comfort and Joy, and Category 6: Day of Destruction! Loved her in all of course but my favorites were A Cry For Help and The Division.:D
I wish the Mickey Mouse Club stuff that Lisa did was out on DVD. I've seen pics but that's about it.
JoLovesKetchup, you aren't messing around. I think you've seen just about everything Nancy's done. LOL. I haven't seen her few latest films and I really like The Division but I wish they showed it more than at just 1:30 in the morning. I also wish there was some way to see the film that she wrote/directed in 1999 "A Wakening" or whatever it was called.
Charlotte I mostly love from "The Worst Witch" which was a really cheesy television movie made around 1985 with Diana Rigg and Tim Curry. It was based on a childrens book and was complete with singing and dancing. Charlotte played the headmaster of a witches academy. She also had a dual role and played her evil twin sister as well.
I think everyone has seen Molly Ringwald and George Clooney since their FOL days.
Kim also guested on a notable ep. of Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
Nighthawk76 06-06-2006, 05:40 PM I've seen Charlotte Rae in Diff'rent Srrokes. Forgot about that.

 There's actually so much that I haven't seen. Some earlier cartoon stuff and I'm dying to watch Teresa's Tattoo! OOH I also saw Kim Fields in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air! Forgot about that lol.
Speak of the devil. One of my local tv stations has taken to playing some of the older after school specials and I watch from time to time because they are good for a laugh.
When I came home today they were playing "Please Don't Hit Me Mom" which is a movie Nancy made in 1981 with Patty Duke and Sean Astin in his first role ever.
It's so unintentionally hilarious because it's so earnest and trying to be hard hitting. A lot of the Patty Duke scenes where she was supposed to be beating her son (Sean Astin) came off very over the top.
Nancy plays Nancy (stretch, huh?) and she babysits for Sean Astin and starts seeing the signs and eventually calls Child Protective Services. Of course there is a neat happy ending in under an hour and there is even time left over for her to land her guy.
What's funny is seeing Nancy in much girlier roles than what she's known for. Here she is talking about designer clothes and proms and dances and boys. Let's just say, Jo she ain't.

AHHH MAN! I'm jealous! :( I've been dying to see that one!
AHHH MAN! I'm jealous! :( I've been dying to see that one!
I wish you could have. It was so funny.
Justwondering 06-15-2006, 11:22 PM I watched "The New Mickey Mouse Club" when it debuted on afternoon TV back in 1977. Heck, I even bought the cast album! (I was 10, so don't hold it against me!) So, a couple of years later, I certainly recognized Lisa Whelchel and Julie Piekarski, when the FOL debuted.
For those who never saw the show, it was combination of skits and song and dance performances, that lasted half-an-hour. It was on Monday through Friday. (Fridays were a "Who, What, Why, Where, When Day!" To let you in on what I'm babbling about, the cast had 5 opening theme songs they would sing, depending on the day of the week. All five appeared on the cast album.) It was a great time to be a kid!
OKCRay 06-26-2006, 02:29 AM There are undoubtedly many more but here are a couple I've seen recently:
Julie Anne Haddock (Cindy): played the Silver Slippers leader in GIMME A BREAK (the "Julie's Rejection" episode)
Kim Fields: played one of Roland's ex-girlfriends in an episode of GOLDEN PALACE (recently started airing again on Lifetime, they usually run it when they complete the GOLDEN GIRLS cycle and before they start it up from the beginning again). She also played a high school principal (or maybe vice-principal) in the two-part finale of THE DIVISION.

Wow I thought I almost saw it all LOL....I didn't see the Category 6 movie or Just Write. I did see her "risque" role in "Where the Day Takes You" produced by her brother I believe. Plus, I haven't seen the Love Boat episode. I thought she did a good job in "Strange Voices." I really enjoyed Nancy in "The Division" - those intervention scenes were wow!!! Aside, from "Facts", the Jinny role was a good role for her...
;)
tfolfan76 06-26-2006, 01:31 PM I really enjoyed Kim's role in "Living Single"... I also saw one of Kim's movies (where's shes on the cover - it's on DVD)... I saw Mindy in "The Boy Who Could Fly" and "The Help". Recently, I've see Cloris on "Malcolm in the Middle." She seems to never age LOL.... I remember seeing Charlotte guest starring in one of Nancy's show.
What I've really enjoyed is watching Alex Rocco play her father and her uncle in the mafia movie.. No one else (can I picture) playing in that role.... I used to own High School USA and Poison Ivy on VHS but then years ago, I moved and somehow those tapes disappeared... But I remember back then, I would watch those movies over and over again.
I think at Best Buy, I saw a DVD for the after school specials... Maybe Nancy is on one of them but I have yet to see that one or any of her earliest ones....
Oh lord, I saw Mindy in "The Help". She was fine but that show was awful. No wonder it didn't last long.
You are right about Cloris Leachman though. She never really seems to age. I forgot about her when I started this. I have seen her in so many things but I associate her with The Mary Tyler Moore show above all else. Most recently I think I saw her in Spanglish.
Plus I just caught Mackenzie Astin last week on the WB show "Pepper Dennis". I was only half paying attention so I'm not sure who he was playing but he had a prominant role in the episode.
I also think at this point Nancy and Alex Rocco are a package deal. It's kind of funny how often they have worked together. But I also noticed on IMDB that Alex's son Mark is also a director and has worked on projects (behind the scenes) with Philip McKeon as well as Nancy so I'm guessing the two families are very much intertwined at this point.
Tfolfan76, I know Nancy appeared in an Afterschool Special called "Schoolboy Father" that is out in one of those DVD sets. I've never seen it but it's with Rob Lowe and Dana Plato. I don't think Nancy's part is all that big in that one though.
FredScuttle 06-28-2006, 09:53 AM A few other FOL cast appearances:
John Lawlor, Felice Schachter and Nancy McKeon were all on Alice (not on the same episode together):
John Lawlor was on the 2nd season "Sixty Minutes Man"
Nancy on the 3rd season "Who Ordered the Hot Turkey" and 6th season "Alice's Halloween Surprise". (note: Nancy's brother Philip was a regular on Alice)
Felice on the 4th season "Here Comes Alice Cottontail"
I've been watching "The Division" more lately since I didn't see a lot of it the first time around and I'm always amazed at the number of guest stars who appeared on both shows. I don't even know names, but I've seen so many crossovers. Troy Evans who plays Jinny's AA sponsor was on FOL as a police officer and the episode I watched today had one of Mrs. G's sons on. Plus I think the woman who played Miko. I know these weren't regular cast members or anything but usually somebody from FOL pops up.
Also while it hasn't aired yet, I noticed Hallmark Channel has started running promos for Nancy's new movie "Wild Hearts". I rarely watch that channel since it's not my type of programming, but caught a few during a movie the other night.
Justwondering 06-28-2006, 10:18 PM You are right about Cloris Leachman though. She never really seems to age.
Cloris Leachman turned 80 years old in April. Facially, you can tell she has aged some, but her hair style has been so similar for the last 20 years, I think it kinda fools you into thinking she always looks the same.
DOPEY85xxx 07-20-2006, 07:32 PM  i saw her on alice in a few hoilday eps and Theresas tatoo and she mayed a cameo in her brothers produced film Where the Day takes You
OKCRay 07-22-2006, 03:26 AM I've been watching "The Division" more lately since I didn't see a lot of it the first time around and I'm always amazed at the number of guest stars who appeared on both shows... Plus I think the woman who played Miko.
That was Lauren Tom, who appeared on THE DIVISION a few times as coroner Nora Chen. She's put together quite a body of work since her appearances on FOL as foreign exchange student Miko (including JOY LUCK CLUB, BAD SANTA and numerous TV appearances).
tfolfan76 08-17-2006, 10:26 PM Just saw Alex Rocco in "Find Me Guilty" with Vin Diesel. It's a minor role but nice to see him nonetheless. I also just saw Cloris Leachman in the last Scary Movie 4. (So not funny!) It's a small role but she does what she does best - physical comedy.
Gemini_89 03-31-2016, 12:16 PM Don't forget that Nancy Mckeon played the daughter of a lesbian couple fighting for Gay Rights in the 1978 movie, "A Question of Love".
'80sSitcoms 04-01-2016, 10:40 AM Here are some more:
John Lawlor guest starred on the final season of Mr. Belvedere in the season 6 episode "Fear of Flying" from Nov. 4, 1989. He teaches a "fear" class in the Owens household to help George get over a fear of flying.
Kim Fields appeared in 5 episodes of Diff'rent Strokes.
Kim also guest starred in an episode of 227 on Feb. 6, 1988 during the last season of FOL, called "The Roommate". She played a shy insecure wallflower named Donna who was the daughter of a friend of the family who has come to stay before her college dorm is ready, but she rooms with vamp Sandra and transforms into a man-hungry vixen who steals Sandra's date  You can watch the episode here on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohamrFUwuLo) (it's posted in 3 parts).
Charlotte Rae also guest starred in an episode 227 in season 5 on Nov. 25, 1989 called "Reunion Blues". She played Millie McMillan, the mother of new resident Dillon McMillan. What I love about this episode (other than Charlotte's delightful performance) is that when she first appears on the episode, at Mary and Lester's door when they answer it, the audience gives her a round of applause before she can deliver her first line. :) You can watch the episode here on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gT61ZLdjPX8).
Mindy Cohn appeared on an episode of the twin sitcom Double Trouble. This show only lasted two seasons smack dab in the middle of the '80s. Mindy's turns is in the 1985 season two episode "Funny Girl" from March 2, 1985. This is interesting in that she plays a combination of Blair and Natalie; she's a very, very rich girl who uses wit and wants to be a stand-up comic. But, she's a jerk, lol, because she steals one of the twins' fashion designs. You can watch the episode here on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jc7yMgpdRpo).
And while not an acting role, Mindy was the celebrity guest star in the season 8 opening episode of What Not To Wear. You can watch the episode here on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_4R39hkQ3Y).

Ah, that's what happened! I was reviewing the thread, and couldn't find the Julie Anne photos. Then I saw they were posted below, and I was confused.
I have amended my original response, for the sake of clarity.

Yes she sure does!
And John looks VERY different with a different haircut. I'm not sure I would have recognized him from the screenshots. Maybe his voice, though, would have alerted me.

I'm sure that's what did it for me when I first saw him. Knowing that voice, then realizing it's actually him, lol.
Also, this makes 2 sitcoms he has appeared on wearing a "HELLO My Name Is" name tag

king of comedy 07-18-2018, 09:27 PM Mindy Cohen was the voice of Velma from Scooby Doo from the late 90s to today.

YEP!
In the late 1990s, I caught several episodes, and eventually recognized the voice. She's as great as Velma as she was as Natalie.
