View Full Version : I think they ruined the Denise character...
Brian Damage 06-05-2006, 10:56 PM ...when they married her off and became a step mom. When I first watched it, it didn't bother me, but thinking about it now, Denise was at her best when she single and irresponsible. They matured her and she became very boring.

I hated the Denise character, however, there is one episode that I love her in because it shows her at her best...being dumb and also her coming to that conclusion that she is DUMB. The one where she wants to be a teacher after seeing the rapping teacher and thinks she can get the easy way to being a teacher simply by rapping to kids. She learned that there is no easy way to being a teacher. She must go back to college. And she did.
She (i don't know if the character messed up or Lisa did for real) also multiplied incorrectly when she was drumming and rapping. She said 3x3 is 3.
LMAO!!!!!!!!!!
I also agree that her getting married was not good.
Her being a stepmother was very stupid also because although I know there are many cases of a mother relinquishing her child or a father getting physical custody, the mother of Olivia had no reason to NOT PHYSICALLY HAVE HER CHILD. I found it so ridiculous that a man in the service had physical custody of his child. They introduced the audience to Olivia's mother and she was a very nice and seemed intelligient. No plausible reason for the mother to have relinquished her parental rights.

The only reason they gave Denise a child was to have another cute kid in the show. You're right, there wasn't anything wrong with Olivia's mother. Someone posted earlier that they should've just gone ahead and written Phylicia Rashad's year 3 pregnancy into the script because 3 seasons later they added 3 year old Olivia to the cast anyway.

Oh heaven forbid Claire have another child....  But you are so right abt that. The "cute kid" syndrome is not a good idea. Don't tv producers GET THE IDEA THAT IT'S NOT CUTE????
jaylovenyc 06-07-2006, 02:28 PM The Denise character was very necessary. It was as a balance between goody two shoes Sandra and NYU bound Theo. So what if Denise made bad decsions and thought she could loop her way out of them. Like you haven't thought about that. You're all perfect right? You actually finished college, didnt have sex until you were married and then had children, right? Bull*****.
The Denise character was something that I call.. a human being. They needed to her have her because the family was just too perfect. Okay it was found later that Theo had dyslexia but still, he got over it. There's always a black sheep in the family and Denise was sort of that.
I liked Denise because she was a rebel. The bad girl. LOL. She wasn't afraid of what her parents thought or anyone else. She just acted like she did to save her a$$. LOL. She had her own mind. Cut the girl some slack. It's not like she became a prostitute or a a drug addict. LOL.

You don't know me or anyone else here to make any sort of innuendos or accusations. Denise is a character, that we can discuss. She wasn't a real person. As a matter of fact I am a college graduate. That has nothing to do with discussing in verbatim a character that some of us found to be more of a cartoon at times. I think the Becky character on Roseanne was more realistic. I could relate to that character.
Denise was a flaky character. They could have done some good with the character returning from Africa still an unmarried girl and done some funny stuff, dumb stuff, serious stuff with her character rather than have her marry a guy with a child. The only reason Bill had her marry was so they could bring in the Olivia character. Which was sooooo unnecessary. Also, it coincides with the fact that LISA BONET happened to marry in real life at this time.
My family had no black sheep. No one was treated any different than the other. We all were different in many ways, but no black sheep here. Maybe in your family, but don't generalize us here.
The Denise character slowly but surely became "dumber" as the seasons went on. She became a caricature.

I totally agree with you
No one's perfect and I think that's what Cosby was trying show. Even when you screw up sometimes in life you can always redeem yourself. Even though I really didn't care for the Olivia character, I think her addition to the show really matured Denise, and that's what she needed, to actually focus on something for more then 5 mins and not be so wishy washy.
Mr. Television 06-07-2006, 05:29 PM I didn't mind the Olivia character. I lliked her a lot better than Pam. I didn't care for Denise though especially when they made her so stupid and then we all had to listen to perfect Claire explain why she was stupid. Ugghh. I didn't even like her on ADW. I think that show got much better after Denise left.

I must have missed the episode where Denise was called stupid.
Mr. Television 06-07-2006, 05:48 PM I must have missed the episode where Denise was called stupid.
It happened in just about every episode involving Denise in the later years. Claire never came right out and called her stupid but that was the point of those episodes. Denise would mess up and then we would get a nice long speech usually from Claire about the stupid things her daughter did.
And Denise was stupid. I would call her that right from my couch. I seriously think she was dropped on her head as a child.

That's called parenting, that's what a Mother's and or Father's are suppose to do. You talk to your children when they do crazy things, You just don't sit there watch and do nothing. You have to give advice and actually sit and have a conversation with them, even if they don't like what you have to say.

It was repetitive. It might have been good parenting but it didn't make for good comedy.

A TV comedy can't be funny every minute. And Claire didn't have that many talks with Denise.
Brian Damage 06-07-2006, 06:23 PM I didn't have a problem with them maturing Denise, but do it gradually. She just appeared with a husband and a step child. The Denise character was at her best when she would do her own thing and screw up. She was my favorite character on the show. I thought it was great that she dropped out of college, because it fit her character so well.

I am glad she dropped also. However, we must remember that she married in real-life and became pregnant after...Bill didn't want the stereotypical "teenage pregnancy" to plague his show. One of the reasons Lisa was taken off of ADW.
I just don't like how the character became like Brian stated. That was sooo unrealistic.

Then we agree to disagree. Get over it, it's not that serious hun. Try some fiber in your diet. Sheesh LOL

Yes exactly. All because you came from a "perfect" Brady bunch family doesn't mean you're immune to f*ckin up ya know? Come on here, this is the real world. And Denise was very realistic. I can relate 110% to her character because I went through that phase myself. Of course, I didn't come home with some new husband and step child by surprise. LOL. But there was a time in my life where I didn't know where I was going or who I wanted to be. I didn't get my masters until I was 35. I made 70K last year and while I'm not rich, I'm doing quite comfortably as a Nurse Practioner.

sounds like you're the one who can't get over it. you keep "talking"...pleeeeeze.
A Different World became a much better show with Denise gone.
Let's not get me started on my I HATE CLAIRE issue...

I agree
I have a friend who went to college for 2 yrs and then dropped out in the beginning of her Jr yr when she became pregnant. And she's just now going back to finish what she started and she's 26. Like I said College isn't for everyone, people have to go at their own pace.
mstewart 06-08-2006, 11:09 PM The Denise character in the first two seasons was great. She dressed differently from her sisters and her views were different but she was a lot more responsible in the early seasons than A Different World and when she came back to TCS. They did the Denise character an injustice in the later years. I don't blame Lisa for not wanting to be a part of any reunions they have.

I absolutely agree with that. I actually did enjoy the Denise character during the early seasons.
ThomasE 06-09-2006, 06:39 PM My favorite season with Denise is season 2. She was awesome. She was spunky and funny and she just stood out. She went so many phases and wadrobe changes each year(including her 1 year on ADW). I loved Denise. She was fun and stylish.
TVFactFan 06-11-2006, 06:44 PM I never saw the point of her coming back to the Cosby show if she didn't retrn to the show that was created for her.

What was Cosby going to do? Write off a kid that had been there for what? 4 or 5 seasons
ThomasE 06-11-2006, 09:59 PM Solomon, are you talking about "A Different World"?
Mr. Television 06-11-2006, 10:06 PM What was Cosby going to do? Write off a kid that had been there for what? 4 or 5 seasons
They eventually did during the last season anyway.
TVFactFan 06-11-2006, 10:07 PM What was Cosby going to do? Write off a kid that had been there for what? 4 or 5 seasons
SHe should have had the option of being written back into a different world or being written out of the cosby show altogether
ThomasE 06-11-2006, 10:07 PM I was dissappointed that she left during the last season. THe show was still good but she was missing element.
TVFactFan 06-11-2006, 10:08 PM Solomon, are you talking about "A Different World"?
Yes
Brieannas21 06-12-2006, 12:22 AM They eventually did during the last season anyway.
That's true, BUT it made more sense to do it in the 8th season rather then the 4th.
Brieannas21 06-12-2006, 12:27 AM SHe should have had the option of being written back into a different world or being written out of the cosby show altogether
She was pregnant so having her pregnant on ADW would have looked stupid. And plus she took like a half season off of Cosby after she had her baby. They weren't going to stop production just so Lisa could give birth and stay home with her baby for 2 months. Also when they got Debbie in on the 2nd season they made a lot of changes, and I don't think she would have fit in anyway.
Rue_McClanahan 06-18-2006, 08:12 PM I didn't mind them making Denise more mature. She had to grow up sometime. I just don't think they should have done it all at once. She just came back and was suddenly a married woman with a step-child. I agree that she was at her best when being stupid and messing up all the time. It was good to have that sort of charactor on the show, cause the family seemed to be so perfect and that showed that not everyone can be so perfect. It gave the show a bit more reality in my openion.
Troi Tribble 11-19-2006, 12:56 AM I think Lisa Bonet ruined herself, PERIOD!!!!

I hated her ADW wardrobe. So cheesy and not like her at all.
Jack1000 01-19-2007, 10:05 PM I liked Denise,
But when she came back from Africa with Martin and step-daughter Olivia, her character was no longer the same. Maybe it's because I HATED OLIVIA!!! She was neither cute nor funny!
