at 7 hours per dvd, can the quality really be that good? i am thinking that 4 hours is about the limit for good quality, 2 hours is best

you bring up a very good point

great original feeds on 4 hour speed , makes a very nice dvd

i also wouldnt want more than 4 hours, especialy since blanks are 20 cents per anymore,

i do have to admit, that good quality sources have no difference from a 2 or a 4 hour final disc

i have taped a few things
straight to disc at higher speed before

just to watch them for me
and i noticed a sligher pixellation and bit of haze at high 6/8hour speeds

Thank You Gentlemen!

Hello Loren + a southern'rs 'Hey' for Lamont:
I was all these years since the Home DVD-Recorder and cheap DVD-r's became the going thing (that's when I got into this hobby) always firm unshakkable believer in [satellite_2_s-video_2_vhs__in_standard_play_den_2_DVD-RW_den_2_my_PC_den_2DVDShrink__2_edited start/stop frame_DVD-R_den_&_onlyden_then did I consider I had in my mind a 'master'] (I am not talking about other peoples collection's I bought, on ebay, Yahoo, iOffer, sell.com, etc etc........ my mentality was,,, and I was,,,,, STAUNCH [ALWAYS MAKE YOUR 'Masters' in VHS or Super-VHS]...Unbreakable rule Number One.... Well one day I read a thread by Loren stating that is was totally un-necessary to do 'back-up' in vhs first, Loren promoted the idea that people in this hobby should be sure of themselves 'nuff to set+forget their settop DVD recorder's timers and other (I would call them rather delicate) settings and not worry about it. It was an attractive thought,, but I couldn't let go, VHS is a 'security-blanket' it marches on with no regard for to signal dropouts, or voltage impedance levels (early DVD recorders protected themselves from any & all fluctuations in impedance (which just means 'opposition-2-outputed-current' VCR's don't have advanced cpu-processors to protect (please see; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impedance This article has a lot of important issues that I used to wholeheartedly agree with;

Pros and Cons: DVD-Recorder vs VCR/VHS vs DVD-R;

Who's the Winner?

& Which is Best?

All video recording devices are similar in that they make it possible to delay watching television until a later date. But, they all have subtle differences from one another. Ideally, every person would find room next to their television for each device as they each have their own advantages. Of course, they also have their disadvantages, which is the purpose of this list.

DVD-RECORDER
Pros:

Programming can be recorded onto a lifelong, virtually indestructible disc
Discs are relatively inexpensive
Can use disc over and over when recording to a Re-Writable disc
Easy to connect to VCR for VHS to DVD conversion or to DVR for permanent storage
DVD quality is hard to beat Cons:

Misuse of discs can lead to damage that can't be repaired
Labeling discs is imperative for storage
Discs have limited space
Recording on non re-writable discs can get expensive
Compatibility between DVD types (+R/-R) is not 100-percent right now VCR - VIDEO CASSETTE RECORDER
Pros:

Over 20 years of people using on a frequent basis makes it difficult for the technology to completely disappear
Over 20 years of video tape collections compiled, which make it expensive to replace with DVDs
Easy to use
Blank or Recorded tapes are inexpensive
VHS tapes can be reused with little difficulty Cons:

Tracking issues between different players
Picture quality can degrade on tapes being used over and over
Outdated technology - recording in digital not possible with older VCRs DVR - DIGITAL VIDEO RECORDER
A PVR or Personal Video Recorder is another term for DVR.
Pros:

All recording is self-contained inside the unit - no external media required
When sudden situations arise (like water boiling over the pot or turning off the sprinklers) a person can pause live television and watch it moments after handling the situation
Money saved in buying VHS cassettes and DVDs is endless
Possibility to record in HD
Dual tuner models make it possible to record on one channel while watching another when connected to a digital cable/satellite service provider Cons:

Limited hard drive space
Hard drive is not meant for permanent storage
Hard drive could crash causing all info on drive to be lost
Many DVRs require monthly subscriptions for advance recording of showsWell let me make a long story short, I wanted BENSON on 7 DVD's soooooooooooooo Bad, because I knew that 25 or so DVDs would entail using 'Bennies' to stay awake and change the Discs, which means the project would fail.. TIVO has very low resolution, the owner's manual says the MPEG quality is based on a variable formula.. Certainly a PVR (I have a RCA PVR) would fix that problem, but then I would have to watch or babysit the Marathon again... VHS is the traditional way to solve the problem (record on a VCR using s-video and perhaps Super-VHS if you can afford (or even find) S-vhs Blank Tapes.. Everyone knows that a VCR does a HELL of a GOOD JOB at SuperLongPlay ( now we have inexpensive 8-HR 160minute DELUXE BLANKS at Wal-Mart etc..) speed, because blank tapes back then cost an arm and a leg when the first VCR's appeared in 1975 or so, people had no choice but record SLP with Rabbit Ears (but that's another bygone problem...)... Then
the next step would be to transfer to DVD-R\-RW at SP speed, and "YOU ARE GOOD 2 GO" as they say... Well I decided that I would go with the times and TRY out "Tele-Star_Satellite_2_S-video_outputcable_2_DVD_Recorder_at maximum_compression" Something I would NEVER consider doing VHS-2-DVD... Well I was shocked!! Great Quality..

C'mon guys, I am doing a set of the 7 Bensons tonite anyway. It only takes a little longer if I set Roxio-8 to 3 instead of 1, I can send each of you a set, and see for yourself, you can always re-swap the 7 DVD's if you decide not to add it to your list.. Or a Brian Hackett on Wings would say "or not" but let me know, I want you see how my work looks now that I am not being so stubborn + I am following Loren's recording suggestions.

that good quality sources have no difference from a 2 or a 4 hour final disc
Only 1/2 right. Good quality sources, recorded with machines with good quality encoders, have no difference from a 2 or a 4 hour final disc. But if the encoder on your recorder is a piece of crap, it doesn't help much to have a good quality source.

just for info sake

and this is not an order for you to do this

but the set and forget recorders i use, are directv tivos

its about as simple as can be to set them

actualy in the case of the benson marathon, i had the option of setting it for all 48 hours in one block--my machines have 250 gig hardrives

on ebay for about $40 shipped, you can buy a nice power backup unit, its justsa rechargable battery pack to make sure that your programs dont get erased by the summer storms or just a surge--to ease your mind

lets say you want a certain show everyday at 2pm , it also has a daily option, weekly, etc

another featrure is if you like a certain show, you can tell it to grab it every time its on any channel

thats why im not interested in a vhs machine, i dont even own one

my quality comment was that 4 hour is the limit for great results, in my mind

yes some folks use 8 or more hour speed, and its maybe ok, but with 20 cent discs, i paid 15.5 last week for riteks from office depot, it seems a waste to do the work and jam it on 7 hours, when 4 hours would be great, and cost maybe a dollar a set difference, if that much

and yes there are tivo recorders that also allow you to record single discs right from the hard drive in the same machine

One exception:

If it's a show with a lot of action scenes or a game (basketball, hockey, etc ...) where there's a lot of motion, 4 hour mode is no good. You will see alot of pixelation and artifacts on the screen.
Always better to record in the 2 hour mode (IMO) this way you can please more people. You will have the original sources for people who swear by SP recordings ... AND, if you choose to, you can always shrink the episodes (i.e compress them with software) if you want to fit more episodes on a disc.
Lazygrae, I think you saw the advantages to this firsthand on the last project we did.

Absolutely I did, thanks for the tip. I also agree with you what you said about recording shows with lots of motion. I was wrong to say that there would be no difference between SP and LP, that wasn't my intention. I was just quoting Loren's sentence. My point was that the only chance one had at having good success at the 4-hour mode was to have both a high quality source and a high quality encoder, that having a good source in and of itself was not enough to do a decent job.

Loren has made this "no difference" comment before and I must say that my experiences with 4-hour recordings have left me less than satisfied. Whether it's due to the source, or the encoder, a combination of the two, or whatever, most of the 4-hour recordings I've seen are poor, sometimes they are acceptable but definitely inferior, and only rarely do I find them to be indistinguishable to a 2-hour recording. I probably have not seen any of Loren's work and he may very well have top quality equipment and source material that results in a good job, but most people, it seems, do not.

lets set the ground rules for my idea

top quality feed from directv, or good cable

good machinery

the same experienced person doing the job

two hour versus 4 hours on the final disc

all other aspects the same

i say theres no noticable differance from 2-4 hours

yes numerous factors will make a huge difference

i see peoples digital cable to dvd transfers that are seriously a 7 of 10 quality

any weak link will result in a lesser end product, that goes in any production, even makeing paperweights
