CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Former “American Idol” contestant Chris Daughtry said Saturday he has turned down an offer to be lead singer for the band Fuel.

Daughtry, in Greensboro for a day of welcome-home appearances, said he expects to announce his next career move in few months, probably after he finishes with an “American Idol” summer concert tour.

“I’m going to be doing my own thing,” Daughtry told The Charlotte Observer.

The band offered Daughtry a job hours after viewers voted him off the Fox television talent show last month. Bass player Jeff Abercrombie and guitarist Carl Bell made their pitch on the TV show “Extra.”

He would have replaced Brett Scallions, who quit the multi-platinum rock band in February.

I think that is a very smart move by Daughtry. He can be so much bigger on his own.

I'm sure he will have no problem getting a contract. And if he goes solo, he will get more money.

My opinion of the offer by Fuel was that they know he is going to be a big star. They wanted to ride his coat tails to a bigger career!! I think it was a smart move on his part. He can and will be much bigger if he decides to stay with AE, or if he decides to go out on his own!!

He's gonna do amazing no matter what because he is talented and he has a huge dedicated fanbase to support him all the way. Go Chris!

Although it was an impressive offer, I also think Chris will be able to strike it out on his own and carve out a highly successful career! :)

good job chris. he has enough talent to be a solo artist. being in a group would be a waste of talent imo
