View Full Version : Did Sam the butcher die? Brian Damage 06-03-2006, 05:59 PM Just curious. ghd 06-03-2006, 09:18 PM No hes still alive but hes like eighty. passionsfan79 06-03-2006, 09:52 PM I didn't think so. Brian Damage 06-03-2006, 11:45 PM I'm just asking because I haven't heard or seen him in years. I at least thought that he would've done the Very Brady Christmas special. BuddyHinton 06-04-2006, 03:58 AM Never cared for him anyway:( I did like the actor in the Andy Griffith Show when he played the bully towards Barney Fife:) tv star collector 06-04-2006, 08:35 AM I guess I misunderstood the question. I thought the poster was asking if the CHARACTER "Sam the Butcher" died (not the actor, Allan Melvin). By the way, besides on-screen roles in such series as SGT. BILKO, THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW, THE BRADY BUNCH and ALL IN THE FAMILY, Allan Melvin was also the voice of such cartoon characters as Magilla Gorilla and Bluto (in the last series of Popeye cartoons)! PrettyinPink55 06-04-2006, 12:16 PM I liked him best on All In The Family :) gilligan fanatic 06-04-2006, 01:06 PM I was reading a while ago and I think his last credit was on Tale Spin in 91. That was 15 years ago tv star collector 06-04-2006, 02:11 PM I just learned that Allan Melvin (born Feb. 18, 1922) is alive and is 84. Mr. Television 06-04-2006, 02:18 PM I thought I read that he recently did a commentary for the Sgt. Bilko DVD. magellan333 06-04-2006, 04:27 PM What kind of character did he play on Sgt. Bilko? Mr. Television 06-04-2006, 04:39 PM What kind of character did he play on Sgt. Bilko? He played Cpl. Henshaw, a member of Bilko's platoon. comedyfreak 06-04-2006, 09:14 PM Don't forget, Allan Melvin also played Sgt. Hacker on Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. tdr 06-04-2006, 10:59 PM Yes, on Gomer Pyle he was Sgt. Hacker, both a platoon leader and the mess sergeant. Of all the times Sam and Alice got made at each other, didn't Alice ever offer to introduce him to her cousin Emma, who should be more like him  ? magellan333 06-06-2006, 11:11 PM Yes, on Gomer Pyle he was Sgt. Hacker, both a platoon leader and the mess sergeant. Of all the times Sam and Alice got made at each other, didn't Alice ever offer to introduce him to her cousin Emma, who should be more like him  ? :D That's cute. gilligan fanatic 08-13-2006, 08:55 PM he did an interview on the new Magilla Gorilla set. Here is a pic from it. http://reviews.goldenagecartoons.com/magilla/allenjoehoyt.jpg Adamantium 08-13-2006, 10:21 PM I thought I read that he recently did a commentary for the Sgt. Bilko DVD. For years I thought he was dead. My sister told me that he had died and that's why he wasn't in the Brady's Christmas movie. I just believed her. It wasn't until I purchased the Sgt. Bilko DVD that I realized he was still alive. I'm glad to find out he's alive. :) nerrad 08-14-2006, 09:11 AM One thinf gor sure: He must've appeared on Andy Griffith at least ten different times, always as someone else. jehobden 09-08-2006, 01:38 AM Strangely enough, "Sam the Butcher" did die, since Lewis Arquette, son of Cliff "Charley Weaver" Arquette and father of those acting Arquettes, died in February 2001. He played Sam in "A Very Brady Christmas", after Allan Melvin retired, although he was younger than Ann B. Davis, Robert Reed, and even Florence Henderson. Johnny be good! 04-22-2007, 12:31 PM Don't forget pal, Allen Melvin is the original Sam Franklin, the butcher, not Lewis Arquette. TJL 04-22-2007, 12:46 PM Sometimes we forget that an actor can retire from acting, just like any other person with a job. I guess we assume that they like to keep working until they die, and when we notice a certain older actor or actress hasn't been on TV for a while, especially a beloved character and voice actor like Allan Melvin, we fear the worst. Tweety 04-22-2007, 03:37 PM In yet another role, Melvyn also played Rob Petrie's main army buddy in "The Dick van Dyke Show". However, he appeared only in "flashback" episodes involving Rob's army days (there were quite a few of those over the years). I think he played a corporal in those episodes, while Rob was a Sargeant. MikeLutton 04-23-2007, 12:13 AM also played on All in the family as barney hefner archies best friend Sam The Butcher 04-23-2007, 12:38 PM i'm still alive, thank you very much . . . bfuller07 01-21-2008, 04:59 AM UPDATE: Allan Melvin who played Sam the Butcher on the Brady Bunch has died. He died on Jan. 19, 2008 in california of cancer, he was 84. Scoobiedoo30 01-26-2008, 02:03 AM what kind of cancer did he have James 02-09-2008, 02:57 AM Weirdly enough, all of the reports of Allan Melvin's death gave his birth year as 1923, not 1922. That was especially evident when they gave his age as 84 (2008 - 84 = 1924, but since his birthday is February 18, subtract 1 and get 1923.). sixfingers 03-23-2010, 03:00 AM i'm still alive, thank you very much . . . Not any more! :( |
