I'm just asking because I haven't heard or seen him in years. I at least thought that he would've done the Very Brady Christmas special.

Never cared for him anyway:( I did like the actor in the Andy Griffith Show when he played the bully towards Barney Fife:)

I guess I misunderstood the question. I thought the poster was asking if the
CHARACTER "Sam the Butcher" died (not the actor, Allan Melvin).

By the way, besides on-screen roles in such series as SGT. BILKO, THE ANDY
GRIFFITH SHOW, THE BRADY BUNCH and ALL IN THE FAMILY, Allan Melvin was
also the voice of such cartoon characters as Magilla Gorilla and Bluto (in the
last series of Popeye cartoons)!

I liked him best on All In The Family :)

I was reading a while ago and I think his last credit was on Tale Spin in 91. That was 15 years ago

I just learned that Allan Melvin (born Feb. 18, 1922) is alive and is 84.

I thought I read that he recently did a commentary for the Sgt. Bilko DVD.

He played Cpl. Henshaw, a member of Bilko's platoon.

Don't forget, Allan Melvin also played Sgt. Hacker on Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.

Yes, on Gomer Pyle he was Sgt. Hacker, both a platoon leader and the mess sergeant. Of all the times Sam and Alice got made at each other, didn't Alice ever offer to introduce him to her cousin Emma, who should be more like him  ?

For years I thought he was dead. My sister told me that he had died and that's why he wasn't in the Brady's Christmas movie. I just believed her. It wasn't until I purchased the Sgt. Bilko DVD that I realized he was still alive. I'm glad to find out he's alive. :)

One thinf gor sure: He must've appeared on Andy Griffith at least ten different times, always as someone else.

Strangely enough, "Sam the Butcher" did die, since Lewis Arquette, son of Cliff "Charley Weaver" Arquette and father of those acting Arquettes, died in February 2001. He played Sam in "A Very Brady Christmas", after Allan Melvin retired, although he was younger than Ann B. Davis, Robert Reed, and even Florence Henderson.

Don't forget pal, Allen Melvin is the original Sam Franklin, the butcher, not Lewis Arquette.

Sometimes we forget that an actor can retire from acting, just like any other person with a job.

I guess we assume that they like to keep working until they die, and when we notice a certain older actor or actress hasn't been on TV for a while, especially a beloved character and voice actor like Allan Melvin, we fear the worst.

In yet another role, Melvyn also played Rob Petrie's main army buddy in "The Dick van Dyke Show". However, he appeared only in "flashback" episodes involving Rob's army days (there were quite a few of those over the years). I think he played a corporal in those episodes, while Rob was a Sargeant.

what kind of cancer did he have

Weirdly enough, all of the reports of Allan Melvin's death gave his birth year as 1923, not 1922. That was especially evident when they gave his age as 84 (2008 - 84 = 1924, but since his birthday is February 18, subtract 1 and get 1923.).
