I recall at least two episodes where a guy was playing a guitar and singing some hippy sounding music. He wasn't in the episode otherwise. What were the producers trying to do here? One of his songs was about going to Tokyo.

I remember reading that he wrote that "Oh, Tokyo" song and sent it in to the producers, who then invited him to be on the show.

I don'now about that, but the guy's name was Loudon Wainright, and his characters name was Capt. Spaulding. The episodes he did were RAINBOW BRIDGE & THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A NURSE.

Yeah...I guess it was just yet another example of one too many doctors....had to cut Duke and Spearchucker, too. I liked his songs, though!
