View Full Version : What does having lung cancer have to do with moving to Arizona?
Ireneparalegal 06-01-2006, 12:39 PM Carl went there for his health. Why???? because of the lung cancer??? what does warm climate have to do with that?
Bookman had lung cancer, he still lived in Chicago.
gilligan fanatic 06-01-2006, 12:44 PM if anything wouldn't the heat make it worse.
TVFactFan 06-01-2006, 12:50 PM Carl went there for his health. Why???? because of the lung cancer??? what does warm climate have to do with that?

yeah and It was said that Lamont took Fred to arizona because of his h-health on sanford arms-lol
PrettyinPink55 06-01-2006, 01:44 PM Oh!!! I always assumed there was a doctor there that could help treat him!
Brieannas21 06-01-2006, 01:54 PM The climate is much drier, so you wouldn't have as much mucus buildup.

Oh so that's why it's a good place to go?
Brieannas21 06-01-2006, 01:59 PM Oh so that's why it's a good place to go?
Yeah
Ireneparalegal 06-01-2006, 02:01 PM But the altitude is not very good for someone with breathing problems/lung related stuff...
Brieannas21 06-01-2006, 02:13 PM But the altitude is not very good for someone with breathing problems/lung related stuff...
If the air is dry it's very good for a person with lung problems. And since AZ is so dry and it's not as humid as a lot of places it's a good place to live, NM also.
nerrad 06-01-2006, 02:27 PM So did Mama from What's Happening. Shyt, as warm as it's been up here this week, I'll melt in 110 degree temperatures.

I don't know how good it is to live there; look what I found, and I found several sites that said it's not a good climate for people:crazy: :
Because of all the dirt and smoke in the air, not to mention the high altitudes, the Pima County Department of Environmental Quality and the American Lung Association of Arizona issues an air quality advisory for people with heart and lung disease.
Beth Gorman, Department of Environmental Quality spokesperson, says, "To the average person it may not mean too much."
She says the health alert is intended for people who are extra sensitive.
She says, "Somebody who has any form of lung disease, somebody who has asthma, somebody who has heart disease or even children whose lungs aren't fully developed."
No wonder Carl died...
CWDogg 06-01-2006, 03:03 PM I heard a lot of people say that before, But I guess its just a myth.
Maybe, Florida was punishing Carl for being an atheist
Ireneparalegal 06-01-2006, 03:04 PM So i guess the old "moving to Arizona" is just a myth as you stated and just a good state to throw characters away...
Janice 06-01-2006, 03:50 PM Climate change won't help anyone's lung cancer. People relocate to warmer climates when they have severe arthritis type diseases. My uncle is crippled with arthritis and had to move away from the brutal New England winters. He lives in California now.

I don't think it would cure a person with Lung cancer but it helps. Dry warm weather would help anyone with an ailment I would think.
And I don't know why it seems like back then they always had characters go to Arizona, it is a beautiful place to visit.
The climate is much drier, so you wouldn't have as much mucus buildup.
I think that's Arizona's state motto.
;)

well, cure is not the word that is being used here, but the air quality is not very good if one is having difficulty breathing or lung related problems. Arizona can be TOO DAMN HOT!!!!

I'm talking about the dry air can help. And plus I live in TX I'm use to hot ass weather LOL
Ireneparalegal 06-01-2006, 06:19 PM But the thing is Arizona is very very hot most of the time. What would Carl do in those circumstances? Sit in a house with the A/C going on. The climate with that going on couldn't possibly be good for someone suffering from lung cancer. A/C is not always good.
CindyRoxiesLair2006 06-01-2006, 06:23 PM The climate is much drier, so you wouldn't have as much mucus buildup.
Well put and quite true, Briennas... :happyface Good!!
Arizona's climate is much better for people who have lung or another form of quick-progressive cancer, and this is why Carl decided on this as a long-term living choice, per se...
Can't say I blame him, either.
:happyface
Ireneparalegal 06-01-2006, 06:26 PM Well, unfortunately for Carl, there was no long-term for him. Good for us the viewers because Flo came back...but the show was already going downhill.

Excellent and true enough points on both counts, there...
In any case, Arizona was a pretty good and interesting choice to make as far as Carl & his health were concerned... :happyface
Lamont 06-01-2006, 10:32 PM hmmmmm
wonder why we never see what happens in arizona?
characters go there, and we never see them?.....
conspiracy?
ThomasE 06-02-2006, 12:46 AM yeah and It was said that Lamont took Fred to arizona because of his h-health on sanford arms-lol
Both characters derive from shows that involve Norman Lear. Maybe it was his idea. LOL. I remember Phil Wheeler telling that to Grady and Dolly.

I wonder if Norman retired in Arizona???
ThomasE 06-02-2006, 12:51 AM He probably moved there to do a reality spinoff idea about people with lung cancer that leave hit TV Shows. LOL.

Is it a spin-off?
ThomasE 06-02-2006, 01:11 AM I can see it now. Fred Sanford meets Carl Dixon. Two successful businessmen that leave big cities for hot weather and better health with sons and wives only to have their former shows crumble.

ThomasE 06-02-2006, 01:14 AM Is it a spin-off?
Per Executive Producers Allan Mannings and well let's just say for argument's sake..we'll call this other person "S". The show really isn't a spinoff because we would have to explain how we never saw a wedding pilot episode for Carl and Flo and an ep with Fred Sanford leaving Watts, Los Angeles, CA:lol:

ThomasE 06-02-2006, 01:21 AM Per "S" Carl's name has been changed to Marlon which is why it is not a spinoff. Norman Lear decides to do the show in Arizona because he grew up there with a friend whose father that had lung cancer. It is based on his life experiences of chain smoking. Carl is no longer a business owner but is now assistant manager at McGrady's Restaurant with only a 12th grade education.

I thought Carl moved to Walnut Grove...and became friends with the Ingalls family?
ThomasE 06-02-2006, 01:33 AM I thought Carl moved to Walnut Grove...and became friends with the Ingalls family?
So that is why Florida went back to Chicago?
PrettyinPink55 06-02-2006, 01:42 AM Why didn't Carl come with Florida?
Ireneparalegal 06-02-2006, 01:47 AM Why didn't Carl come with Florida?
He died.
PrettyinPink55 06-02-2006, 01:51 AM He died.
WOW!!! How did I miss that??
Ireneparalegal 06-02-2006, 01:53 AM WOW!!! How did I miss that??
We all missed it. I think Florida missed it too. He was never mentioned ever again when Florida returned home. It was like POOF...be gone.

I personally believed that Carl passed away. I believe the producers did not want to put the audience through another loss. We all felt and grieved with Florida, J.J., Thelma and Michael when James died. The show did the whole thing from getting the news, everyone gathering at the house after the funeral and coping with James being gone. It was heartfelt by the audience. We all loved James and Florida as a couple and we invested into their relationship. I did not want to watch the show go through the whole process again.
Brian Damage 06-02-2006, 11:34 AM :yeahthat:
Janice 06-02-2006, 11:39 AM Florida never mentioned Carl after she returned home? Any clues at all?

She gave Michael a book when she got back and said that Her and Carl bought it for him.
magellan333 06-04-2006, 04:39 PM In Tombstone, Doc Holiday had moved to Arizona because he had tuberculosis. I don't know if this true about the real Doc Holiday or not, but I have heard it is.
Ireneparalegal 06-04-2006, 04:46 PM WTF is so special abt Arizona?????????
Brieannas21 06-04-2006, 05:01 PM Well it's hardly cold and it's dry and hot. A lot of old people more to AZ just like they move to FL, For the weather. Where else would you move to for dry hot weather.
But if I wanted wanted dry hot weather I would rather move to Nevada, at least it would be more fun
Ireneparalegal 06-04-2006, 05:43 PM God, the thought of dry weather is making my sinuses start up.
Right now it is abt 90 degrees and the air is hot, no breeze. I love hot weather, but I don't like it 6-8 months outta the year. The extreme hotness or coldness of Arizona is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.
ThomasE 06-04-2006, 09:10 PM Well. Irene our weather here in florida is hot and humid. Arrrgh. Temp went up tp 100 degrees one time a few weeks ago. The good thing is that we did get rain today. Hallelujah!
liane49 04-27-2013, 01:38 PM Oh so that's why it's a good place to go?
Lots of people with Asthma move to Aiz. It's good for your lungs.
TVFactFan 04-27-2013, 01:52 PM Lots of people with Asthma move to Aiz. It's good for your lungs.
To me that had to be the most stupidest episode topic of all time. I do not want to hear about a sitcom character having cancer. Sitcoms don't have to be that serious.
Couldn't they have come up w/ a different more "plausible" way to explain Esther Rolle's absence in Season 5? Obviously, they weren't going to kill Florida off because they had already gotten rid of James. And they just couldn't act like Florida was still "around" just not seen at the time (a la Mrs. Thomas in the latter episodes of What's Happening!!), because that would've been too insulting to the audience's intelligence.

Not sure if it was mentioned only in 1978 since it was a article mentioning that Carl will be at a Chicago VA hospital at the start of season 6

All I remember is that when Florida returned for season six, someone asked her how Carl was and Florida responded he was doing okay.
And that was it.
Florida moved back in to the apartment, got a job and Carl was never mentioned again.

visaman666 06-10-2016, 01:57 AM I heard a lot of people say that before, But I guess its just a myth.
It was true in the 20's but not for Cancer but Emphasima.

Dr. Thong 06-10-2016, 06:52 PM sorry meant on CBS?
Yep, same network.
Lisalu 06-23-2016, 05:09 PM I don't know about lung cancer, but I think they used to send TB patients to take the dry, desert air cure...
