WKTU (103.5 FM) yesterday dropped its morning team of Goumba Johnny and Baltazar and as of July 31 will become the flagship station for the new nationally syndicated morning team of Whoopi Goldberg and longtime WHTZ afternoon host Paul (Cubby) Bryant.
Goumba and Baltazar did their last show yesterday. Until Goldberg and Bryant start, WKTU plans a "music-intensive" morning show that rotates hosts - starting today with veteran Charlie Burger.
Bryant, who was officially announced yesterday as Goldberg's sidekick, said: "I never thought I'd leave Z100. But the chance to work with Whoopi Goldberg on a nationally syndicated show is something I couldn't pass up. I'm still pinching myself."
He expects to work at WHTZ (100.3 FM) through June 23, take a vacation, then start trial runs of the show with Goldberg on July 10.
Bryant said the music on the show is still being worked out but will be compatible with WKTU, which has had a dance format. With artists like Rob Thomas and Kelly Clarkson, he said, it will lean more toward adults than the music he has been playing on Z100.
Bryant will also give up his music director position at WHTZ but noted that since WKTU is a sister station, "I'll still be working closely with my Clear Channel friends like Tom Poleman [senior vice president of programming]."
He said he and Goldberg plan a show "that parents won't have to turn off" when kids come into the kitchen.
"We'll give people some laughs, some music and everything they need for the day - in 30 minutes."
NEW EMMIS BOSS: Dan Halyburton, a 35-year radio veteran who has spent the last 25 years in Dallas with Susquehanna Radio, will become senior vice president/market manager for Emmis' three city stations, including WQHT (97.1 FM), WRKS (98.7 FM) and WQCD (101.9 FM).
He replaces Barry Mayo, who will become a consultant.
