View Full Version : Even if Jo was a least favorite character did you enjoy Blair and Jo's face offs?

Like TALLguyinKY I don’t not like Jo, she just isn’t one of my favorite characters. However I love (some of the time) watching Blair and Jo having a go at one another. Where it’s not done maliciously and it’s just done to annoy the other one in fun and have some fun and they both know that the other is basically fond of them (I may be using some creative licence here in terms of some of season 2 but writers and producers often do that so why not a viewer) - I enjoy those stand offs. I presume from what I’ve read that in latter seasons they become very close friends and their frienship is no more 'malicious' than between other friends and they both enjoy giving each other a hard time.

I knew when I saw this thread it had somethin' to do with me, LOL. ;) When it's all an equal "Krystal-Alexis for teens" kinda thing, they're really great, lol.

Jo was my favorite, so I don't really qualify but I love the dynamic between Blair and Jo.

Even as time progresses and they get closer, they still enjoy taking shots at each other whenever possible. They don't really let up much as the years go on. It's not done maliciously, well, unless they are actually in a real fight which happens time and again.

They know they don't mean it, and the audience knows it too, but it's kind of like they have to at that point. However without sounding completely cliche, when push comes to shove and one of them has a problem they always go to the other first to confide and for advice.

It's like they really know they are best friends though they might be hard pressed to actually ever admit it out loud.

Jo is not my favorite, i like blair more than jo, but i still like natalie more than the both... and tootie more than jo... but anyways, the fights were sometimes good to watch, but a lot of the time Jo was being dumb in some of hte fights... like ain't miss beholden when she wouldn't take the scholarship from blair's father's company to stay in school! When she thought mrs. g sent in the scholarship application, she was like... i don't care if it's from warner textile mills, but when she found out it was blair, she got all pissed at her for not keeping her nose out of her business... it's just... yea

I'm a fan of Jo and Blair both; and of course, their fights were mostly funny. But it would get old when Jo would threaten one too many punches here and there. I always felt that part of her character was exaggerated.

They stopped with the punches thing I think after the first year or two for the most part. I think most of that was during Season 2.

As for the scholarship thing, yes, I think both Blair and Jo were out of line a bit during that episode for various things. Jo shouldn't have had a double standard over what Blair did when she was willing to accept what she thought Mrs. G did, but Blair before that also said some boneheaded things that understandably made taking help from her a little harder. Blair's whole bit comparing Jo and the scholarship to her family saving starving monkeys was a bit much. If you already don't like taking handouts, having someone basically refer to you as a charity that your family throws money at ain't going to go over well and make you want their help in the first place.

So yes, Jo might have been boneheaded at times, but so was Blair.

At least things things are a bit tamer now than they were 5 years ago on this board concerning these two. Anyone that did not like would get their head bitten off by anyone who was ignorant to start ridiculing them. The other hot topic was the "Cute N Country" impersonator along with "When is the reunion move coming out?" LOL. The Good Times.

It was that bad. People would talk about how they could not get through the day without watching the Facts of Life. It was really sad. "You are stupid if you don't like Jo". "Nancy Rocks". "Shut your mouth!" People acutally thought Lisa Whelchel was frequenting the board under the username "Cute N Country". LOL. Sarah was one of the first people indicate that the person was a fake. It was hilarious. Once people found out that "Facts" retained its 10pm timeslot, they would jump up and scream for joy. It was really pathetic. Those were good times.

What about the eppisode in I think in season 4 where Jo was wanting to become a Nun and Jo near the end of that eppisode actually punches Blair in the eye?

I thought of that, but that was sort of the exception. She usually stopped threatening with the punches past Season 2. Not that I'm defending what happened in that Season 4 episode, but that seemed more like it happened in an unthinking spur of the moment type of deal.

But yeah, I meant for the most part. They stopped playing the "I'm going to punch you out" thing for laughs.

no, he's not saying that people who said that they worshiped nancy like a god got yelled at or screamed at for it, he's saying that the boards used to be so bad, if one person even remotely showed or said they didn't like jo as their FAVORITE girl, they were reamed at for not liking her and it was like you were exiled

Since Blair and Jo came from such divergent backgrounds. Blair's noblesse oblige and Jo's street smart, sort of 'chip on the shoulder' character--ultimately endeared each one to the other and they grew to respect and comprehend each other. I enjoyed seeing that relationship evolve.

I'm sad to hear that that happened. I don't like it when writers character assassinate a character.

Getting a lot of enjoyment from watching FOL is I think a pretty good thing.
There are lots of programs out there that are rubbish, where you have to look very hard to find one morally decent thing in the show - if you can find any. There's drugs or alcohol to become addicted to. Drugs and alcohol often being used as a crutch. There are some totally evil activities out there that some people get involved in if they've seared their conscience enough. If people get a lot of enjoyment from FOL or even use it as a temporary crutch I don't think that's too bad. Someone maybe be shy due perhaps to unpleasant childhood incidents or environments, someone maybe depressed or chronically ill. There are reasons why some people might stay home and watch programs like FOL rather than go out (much). If someone jumps up and down and screams for joy over something like FOL retaining its 10pm timeslot – I think its kind of cute and it puts a little smile on my face.

Back in 1980 when I originally saw "The New Girl, Parts 1 & 2," I have to admit that the tough talk'n character of Jo didn't really appeal to me. I was completely infatuated with Blair.

Looking at those episodes today, I have a new appreciation for Nancy McKeon. What talent! Her character was really needed to balance Blair's out of control ego.
