OMG...it has nothing to do with his son. And it had a good run. I don't know what you consider a short run or long run, but the show was on with Freddie for abt two seasons or three. Freddie Prinze killed himself during the season...this show was HOT HOT HOT...to have the star kill himself led to the downfall of the show itself. Freddie Prinze was a stand up comedian before he got this show. It would have gone on for more seasons had Freddie not killed himself. However, he was using drugs, so how long actually the show would have gone on is hard to say. Chico and the Man is a show I grew up with. It's popularity has always been high. The fact his son's show (which is being cancelled btw) is on has nothing to do with C&TM. Nothing at all. If anything, the show was being seen by the fans of his father, like me. Unless you grew up watching this show, you can't appreciate the quality of it.

He was the first current tv personality that I watched that died like that...all of a sudden. Everyone at school was talking about it the next day. It was so surreal.

I'm not sure if the show would have lasted that much longer since it had two bad seasons in a row before he died

Well, two seasons is a lot when you consider how fast other shows don't get past a season...hell, nowadays if a new show has bad ratings during its first time out, the show gets cancelled. So, to me a good run for a show with not so good ratings is an accomplishment.

Raul was a cute & precocious kids but he was ni Freddie Prinze. Alot of folks on here loved him & the show from the start. Others like me watched the show back then & liked it but weren't in love with Freddie, and then we saw the re-runs on TVLAND & fell for Freddie & the show... :)

I always find everyone's comments interesting. This board is here to honor Freddie Prinze Sr. Freddie was not only a talented stand up comic, he was the first comic Johnny Carson ever asked to come over and sit down after his preforming his routine on the Tonight Show. Freddie was only 19 years old at the time. He went on to sing and dance on the Cher Show...great dancer and singer....he guested on the TOAD show and sang the opening number to rave reviews...you can read that in Orlando's book. His run on CATM was very memorable and the chemisty between Jack Albertson and Freddie was undeniable. Johnny Carson was so moved by Freddie's talent that Johnny ask him to guest host the Tonight Show several times when Johnny was on vacation..not bad for someone barely 21. In his movie Million Dollar Ripoff Freddie showed he could be a dramatic actor as well. Lots of shows, lots of laughs and lots of talent for someone so young. I think what the poster is really asking is WHY HAVEN"T THE MEMBERS ON THIS BOARD RUN OUT OF THINGSTO TALK ABOUT-lol The Good Times Board is not as active as this board and it's on TV LAND every day-lol It's just puzzling that there is always something to talk about on this board

Freddie was a well rounded gifted human being. Being selected with the rest of the talented cast members of Chico and the Man made the show a life long comedy classic, with endless topics to post about here on the board

I supposed that part of the appeal of this forum is that the people on it have become like a mini family... with any and all posters welcome. I know we aren't the only forum on this site that has this kind of popularity, by any means. It does surprise me that a show whose run was short by TV standards has this kind of appeal, but I guess that is partly due to the fact that Freddie was big back in the day and still remembered fondly by those of us who knew him back then and loved him, and by the fact that those who die young sorta take on legendary status, either positive or negative.

I am realistic enough to know that CATM is not everyone's cup of tea. Speaking for myself, I still find the show appealing, even tho it is dated, because it is a part of my teenage years. As we get older, we do tend to look fondly on the things we enjoyed in our youth. I think I have bonded with many of the regular posters on this forum because we share this feeling. And CATM isn't the only popular show from the past whose comedy is dated.... those who enjoy these shows look past the datedness of the humor.

It is also nice to know new fans of Freddie and the show, like our actor friend Laz, who never knew the show or the comedian back in the day, but have discovered them now.

I think that the success of Freddie's son brought the name and the man back into the forefront, but Freddie Sr. still can hold his own, and that is probably why this forum is still so popular. I think Freddie Sr.'s fans do have Jr to thank for helping bring Freddie's memory back into the spotlight. Before Jr became so popular with a new generation of teen fans, Sr.'s name was scarcely remembered except by a few hard core fans.... but now lots of people who remember him and the one show he was known for have come out and wanted to share their memories.

As for CATM's short lived life in re-run syndication back after it went off the air, I have two theories about that. One, that the estate of Freddie Sr. tried their best not to exploit the death of Freddie by mass marketing anything he did in his lifetime, and two, I think the wounds of his death were still too painful for his family, friends and fans for a syndication run to have any success at the time. I dunno which was true, but I think that some of this might have played a part in the fact that we never heard about Freddie or CATM again for 20 years.

I think if the internet had been around back in the day, those of us who are long time fans of Freddie Sr. would have been able to network after his death. But because this wasn't around, we were kinda left to our own memories and feelings. Many of us, like myself, just bottled them up and moved on with our lives. It was only in the advent of E! first airing Freddie's story back in 2000 and then TV Land featuring the show for a while back in 2001 that the fans of the show and the comedian finally went online and got to share all those bottled up feelings with those who understood. It was almost like delayed group therapy. And those of us who availed themselves of this therapy couldn't get enough.... so here we are, still sharing and enjoying each others rememberances.

I suppose it kinda boils down to what some theologians say about faith....

I like this board because I was too young to remember Freddie in detail. I had just turned four when he died. I do remember missing him though. When I read everyone's elses memories it gives me an idea of what I must have been missing. That's why I do more reading than writing :lol: .
Plus you appreciate a show more when it hasn't been overdone in syndication.

I think this fandom has the most activity on the boards cuz all of us loyal fans come & post on here alot. The show may be gone but never forgotten... :)

As for this board's popularity.....well, the show is a great topic, but I think it's the regular posters who really make the board what it is. This is a place to come and share. Find out about Freddie, Jack, Chico, Ed, each other.....seems we can almost always find out something new or correct something we thought we knew.
Appreciating the show is something for the people who "remember it"? Nope, sorry. That's just not true. While it is true that the show is very dated, the topics discussed are still relevant and are timeless. The younger generation can still relate to it....even if we weren't around to see it the first time around.:D

Freddie was grand back in the day. We haven't forgotten that. He was funny and he could do anything. He was oh so FINE........ Lucky's post was right when she said that before the internet - Freddie Sr. fans would just live out our lives remembering Freddie but hardly speaking to others about him.

Until the past couple of years........

I know I came here when I wanted to know about Freddie's son. As a Fred senior fan it was painful to have never known about his son.

You see when Freddie Sr. died his fans never saw his little boy grow up and believe me that was painful for us because we knew that Fred Jr. was out there somewhere............ But yet.........

God has given us........... (Freddie Sr's fans) the knowledge and the joy that now we can follow in his son's career. My heart is full seeing Fred's son out there in HOLLYWOODLAND. I enjoy seeing his son maturing in his movie roles. I really like it when he takes on those gangster roles. You should see me giggling like a teenager when he stars in gangster flicks playing a tough guy.

His Dad would be so proud. I know I am. :)

One of my personal reason why this board is so popular is we ( all of who are regular posters and recently some new (long time ) fans of the show, understand the connection and admire the actors charisma towards one another. I have always admired the connection between Jack and Freddie. Freddie and Isaac's character Mando was a one of kind buddie relationship that can be seen throughout the show as well

Sorry to keep babbling but after watching the episode where Ed and Chico barter there troubles away. It was so obvious that the both of them had instant chemistry. Freddie himself had so much respect for Jack Albertson and Jack could see how mutitalented Freddie was

I'm a little late responding to this, but I'm new visiting this board. I haven't been on SO for a long time so I'm trying to get everyone that's changed their names straight..hard to believe I've been here almost 5 years! I love CaTM and I have a lot of the episodes on tape from TV Land that I watch all of the time. It's such a shame that Freddie went so young....he would have probably been alive still today. I am still the biggest Freddie fan around and always will be. Actually, there is never a day that goes by that I don't think of Freddie in some way or that I don't check out what's going on on the boards and all of his awesome websites. As Lucky mentioned on an earlier post, most of us who remember him from the 70's kept their feelings and emotions bottled up inside after his death. I would have loved to have had access to a computer back then and could interact with all Freddie's devestated fans. It would have been great therapy! When TV Land brought back CATM I thought I had left all those memories and feelings behind me, but wow did they come back with a vengance! I may be quite a bit older than I was when I watched him in the 70's but I still have that "crush" and "loyalty" to him now. All you regular Freddie fans are so very important in keeping his talent, his sexiness and his memory alive!!!!
