I just watched some Three's Company episodes for the first time in a while and it hit me, the type of character Jack plays on the shows is sort of like some guys in real life. They are straight, but they have a lot of women friends. Some people might even think they are gay. They are not tough, and they could not handle a fight. They are into things women are into, like, for example, Jack is into cooking. They are extroverted, funny, and sensitive.
I don't see many of these characters in earlier television shows or movies. Were these types of people even around?

The only one that comes to mind is Felix Unger on the Odd Couple.
He was straight, had some women friends, loved to cook, he was extroverted.

It's funny. I didn't agree with you when I first read that. But I do agree with the movie Felix, played by Jack Lemmon. He was not quite so exaggerated as Tony Randall. Jack Lemmon's Felix was more of a regular guy, as contrasted to Oscar Madison's more extreme character.

Hmm..That's a good point. I don't know when or if they are planning on releasing the TV show on dvd, but, I will have to get that and watch them both and compare Movie and TV Felix.
That was the only character that came to mind.
