Episode 501 is "Breaker Breaker" but eps 502 to 506 are the Evans Get Involved Eps. So why would Penny be in the Breaker Breaker ep and the Evans Get Involved Ep are produced after that ep? For Years I thought the First Apperance of Penny was the Evans Get Involved, not another ep where she just appears out of no where-lol You would think that The EVans Get Involved ep would have been 501 to 505 instead of 502 to 506

I think it must be a mistake. How can Penny appear in an episode, without first being introduced?

Does it really matter? As long as they were aired in the correct order.

A classic case of putting the cart before the horse, per se...I suppose.

Could have been the time that Esther stated she wasn't coming back to the show and they had to figure out how to start the new season?

227 is a prime example of production order and broadcast order.

Perhaps the first episode was "Breaker, Breaker" simply because CBS had to see an episode where the Penny character would fit in. Sometimes TV companies need a demo of sorts for a new character to see if they'll approve it or not. With "The Evans Get Involved", that's simply too long of a demo to shoot (why shoot 4 episodes if you run the chance of being told 'no' by the network?) so they might have done the other one first.

Or it could be that it was the first one done up by the studio (edits, laugh track, direction, etc.) but not the first one shot. Who knows?

Well I would have preferred CBS to say NO to the addition of Janet and just carry on with the characters left on the show

That's fine and dandy Solomon, but the thing is, you asked why the order was different. You didn't ask what our opinion of Penny was. I was just offering a *possible* explanation for why the order was not chronological. I'm probably wrong in my hunches though...

As for Penny, CBS agreed not to give in to Esther Rolle's demands so they were just as eager to get someone (or something) to fill the void. I understand why they brought Penny in. They needed to substitute Esther Rolle's role as mother by making a mother of Willona. Whether you agree that it was the right thing to do is not the issue here.

For me, I could take or leave Penny. She wasn't essential to the show, but she didn't grate on my nerves either. And I liked how Penny catapulted Willona's importance to the show, as well as showing what a strong backbone the character Willona had.

We all know that in Season 6 Esther came back to the show, but during Season 5, the show had no idea that she would come back (they couldn't predict the future after all!). As far as they were concerned, they had to do the show with the idea that she may have been gone for good. That's why they put Willona in the spotlight.

All in all, it wasn't a bad thing. Sure, Penny was not comparable to Florida (Esther Rolle was irreplacable!), but she was fine in her own right. So was Willona. I think the show would have lost something if Esther Rolle had been the one to stay and Ja'Net Du Bois had left. The show needed ALL of the characters.

Yes, the ratings did drop a bit, but I attribute that more to an everchanging timeslot than anything else.

People on shows come and go, just like they do in our own lives. Some we become more fond of than others, but it just keeps going, ever changing. That's how the show should be viewed, at least in my opinion.

Her addition to the show would have been ok if they didn't try to make her the STAR
