A strong earthquake rocked the southern coast of Indonesia's central Java island early Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. A hospital spokesman in Yogyakarta reported 95 people dead and hundreds injured. More injured people were arriving at the city's main hospital, many of them transported in buses and trucks. Search-and-rescue teams said they saw extensive damage to buildings and homes and that some communications were down.

Nobody cares about the place. Over here people used to, but getting yelled at that you're an evil colonial slaver each time you want to help out does little to improve the image.

oh yeah, that is why it is on the news all the time and why we are trying to help that out.

That's because the US never tried to excersize pressure to stop the violent occupation of the Molukkan republic, the (covertedly government-sponsored) ethnic cleansing in Atjeh and East-Timor and the forcibly islamisation of New Guinea by taking property from native Papoea's and giving it to immigrants from Java.
They never proscecuted Sukarno, the nationalist who collarborated with the Axis in World War 2, who caused a massive famine on Java and pressed thousands of his countrymen into slave labour for the Japanese.
They never proscecuted Suharto, who was a corrupt dictator that let opponents disappear and who was one of the most corrupt people ever. His family still posseses billions stolen from Indonesia's coffers. Suharto fortunately died recently.
General Wiranto, the leader of the ethnic cleansing units in East-Timor was never proscecuted and even ran for president, beaten by one of his opponents in a close race.
So if you wonder why some people don't care, well, this is probably why.

It's because this is an American website. Despite the many claims (and a poll posted here) that they care as much about other countries as they do about America, I think most people love their own country more.
If this happened in the U.S. and over 5,000 Americans died, there would be endless threads about it. Just like 9/11 and Katrina.
