View Full Version : AMW coverage on escaped murderer Richard Lee McNair
Of late, America's Most Wanted has been covering the recent escape of convicted murderer Richard Lee McNair. Last month, McNair escaped from a federal prison in Louisiand. The more I review the case, the more convinced I am that he had been previously profiled on Unsolved Mysteries.
In late 1992 or early 1993, UM had a segment about a convicted killer who had escaped from a North Dakota in October of 1992. The man was doing a life sentence for a 1987 murder. McNair himself fled a North Dakota prison in 1992 while doing time for a murder he committed in 1987. The segment was eventually updated with the announcement that the escapee was caught in 1993. McNair himself was captured in 1993.
Needless to say, I put two and two together. And unless I missed my guess, Richard McNair was, in fact, profiled on UM.
Thankfully, AMW is still on the air (and has been officially renewed for the 2006-07 season), so that the show is able to vigorously profile McNair. McNair had first escaped from custody in 1988, but was caught after an injury from a fall. He escaped a second time in 1992, only to be recaptured in less than a year. Let's hope that he's recaptured soon, and that it will be his third and final strike.
For more details on Richard Lee McNair, check out his profile at the AMW web site (amw.com).
Big3sCompanyFan 05-26-2006, 02:37 AM It's AMAZING how McNair totally fooled that cop and they got it on video!! I can't believe they showed on the cop's dash camera that McNair was standing right in front of that cop and all he had to do was slap the cuffs on but he just let him go!!
That McNair totally fooled him but that cop was pretty stupid not asking some better questions like what area or what building are you doing construction on, who is your employer, etc.

True, but even though the cop had heard about an escape, he had yet to have any specific information about the escapee (name, description, etc.). So by the time he discovered the identity of the man he had spoken to, it was too late.
As I said early on in this thread, let's hope that McNair is recaptured soon. I think he will be, considering the fact that he left behind photos he recently took of himself.
Big3sCompanyFan 05-27-2006, 04:03 PM Yeah, let's see if they are any close to capturing McNair tonight. Also, don't you think AMW is focusing a bit too much on this child predator stuff??
I know it's bad and they obviously have to cover it but haven't they devoted like 2 entire shows to it in a row plus they profile those regularly anyway??
There are a lot more unsolved murder, rape, burglary, missing people than child predators.
I know what happened to John Walsh's son and they obviously should cover it but's it's gone a little overboard lately, hasn't it?

If anything, Ican only tell you this: the issue of child predators cannot be ignored. But this should be reserved for a separate thread, since it's an unrelated topic.
Richard McNair is finally back in police custody! It took a year and a half to find him, but what matters most is that he is no longer on the run. But if he should escape again, let's hope it only happens posthumously.

Big3sCompanyFan 10-30-2007, 04:23 AM You know you wonder WHY on earth would a guy as smart as McNair choose a life of murder and crime when he could've been very successful if her were a legit citizen???
Now, I bet he'll be on 23 hour lockdown for the rest of his life or for at least a few years. The amazing thing is they said he would be OUT on parole now if hadn't had all these escape attempts. HOW can you be paroled for 1 murder PLUS an attempted murder??? Makes no sense.
Kane, it looks like you and I are the only ones who care about this topic! LOL!
kadrmas15 10-31-2007, 10:11 PM Well, it makes sense since he is life with parole possible. If he isnt LWOP then it is always a possibility that he could be paroled. However all his escapes attempts will make that virtually impossible for him to obtain parole. I am actually surprised the state of North Dakota is even taking him back into their system.
Remember that triple murderer Kenneth McDuff was paroled in Texas, and many double murderers have been paroled as well, McDuff is the only triple murderer I can think of of hand that was paroled but I am sure there have been others. So the fact that McNair "only" had one murder and one attempted murder, people that have that kind of conviction win parole more than most people realize although the number of lifers paroled has decreased substantially since the early 1990's.
I would have thought he would have been sent to the supermax federal prison in Colorado where he would be on 23 hour lockdown, but apperantly the state of North Dakota, who has never put an inmate on lockdown like that, has said they will do that with McNair.
I am originally from North Dakota and they have a prison system that is rather lenient and really is not prepared to deal with someone like McNair so I can see how he escaped from there. It will be interesting to see how the state copes with him.
Wiseguy, I thought you were being a little rough with Big3company. I see what you were saying, but I dont think Big3 meant any offense, I think he was just joking around because no one else besides him and Kane had really posted about the subject.
I would disagree. The incinuation they made was that they were the only ones that cared about the subject because they were the only ones posting on it, which isn't actually true. I'm sure if I had seen this case, I would care about it, but I tend not to comment on cases I haven't seen.
perhaps they meant it as a joke, or meant to phrase it differently. but there could be a variety of reasons why people don't post on certain topics, doesn't mean that they don't care about it.
also, there is a possibility that big3'scompanyfan is a she.
Big3'scompanyfan meant it as a joke. Hence the "LOL" (laugh out loud) after the sentence.
kadrmas15 11-01-2007, 10:08 AM I agree with Kane, big3 company meant it as a joke. I'm not really sure why you are taking such offense to what big3 said wiseguy. No one else had posted, I dont think he/she literally meant no one had interest, I think he/she was just saying that no one else besides Big 3 and Kane had posted on the topic. That is all it was. You seem to be in the habit of interpreting things when they arent there.
By the way, I put "he/she" since you decided to point out in the politically correct way that I didnt know what gender he/she was. I did it because I assumed that big3 was a male, if big3 is a female, than I apologize. I mainly did the "he/she" thing to make a point about dumb that is to be that politically correct. If you want to do it fine, I dont really care, but dont expect me to adhere to your standards is what I am saying.
By the way, it isnt personal, but when you go out of your way to do things like this, you should expect other people to call you out on it. Like I have said, you have a habit of making something out of nothing and you have done it more than a few times, I am not really sure why you do it, it isnt that you cause offense, but you take offense to lots of little things and I am not really sure why. Seemingly it seems if there is anything that anyone might potentially take offense to you make a big deal out of it. Am I wrong? Like I said, not trying to be a jerk, I dont dislike you personally or anything, but I am just wondering what is up with this?
Big3sCompanyFan 11-01-2007, 06:39 PM OF COURSE, it was a joke! That's why the LOL was there! Don't you know internet lingo, wiseguy? For a wiseguy you're not very wise! LOL! (Another joke!)
The reason I said it is because in 1 and a half YEARS no one had posted on this case but me and Kane. That's a awfully long time to go by for no one to ever read up on it or look into it or hear about it since it was on the news.
But what's this new info about North Dakota taking McNair back? You guys have a link to back this up? I agree that it would be best if he were sent to the Supermax in Colorado or even Pelican Bay in California. I'm pretty sure Pelican Bay will take the worst inmates from other states and Colorado may do the same since they have plenty of open cells there as it was featured on 60 minutes a couple weeks ago.
Then McNair can yell through the toilet to his buddies like Eric Rudolph, the Unabomber, the CIA turncoat, Ramzi Yousef, the Shoe Bomber, 9/11 convict, etc. LOL!
crystaldawn 11-01-2007, 09:58 PM There has been a little discussion about this case as I posted to a thread not too long ago on the UM board. I also provided a link to the video where the police stopped him and he was able to talk his way out of it. I don't think it was shown too much on Lifetime as it was a quick profile. Of course on the UM segment they didn't mention that he escaped again as that was long after it was taped. Anyway glad he's finally been captured and hopefully won't get out again.
