I am a person who is not star-struck by entertainment, sports, media, or political figures. However, if I could meet one person, it would be Dick Van Dyke.

My job has me attending "black-tie" affairs about 6 times per year in NY. Two nights ago, I was seated at a table with Katie Couric (who was very pleasant, but I had never seen more than photos of her - never have seen any morning shows) and another woman who is a costume designer for broadway, as well as the movie and televison industry.

Anyway, as conversation progressed, I told her that if I could have dinner with one person, it would be Dick Van Dyke. Turns out she has met Dick Van Dyke on several occasions, and said he is EXACTLY what you see in the old TDVDS. She said he genuinely likes to talk to people and is very giving with his time. No matter what role he is playing, he apparently is just grateful for the opportunity and hopes the people enjoy the show. She said he is quite generous of his time and money for charitable work, but rarely allows press for it. He is one of the normal and "good-guys" in the industry. She also put Tom Hanks in that category.

You named my two all time favorite actors in your post, Dick Van Dyke and Tom Hanks. It doesn't surprise me at all that they are described as genuinely decent people. I wish there were more like them!

My wife and I like to send letters off to television stars and ask for autographed photos.

I'm always pleasantly surprised how many of them will sign and even personalize the photos. Both Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore signed for us, and even Rose Marie, which given her health is very generous.

Now Richard Deacon, we're still waiting on (bad joke, sorry).

Just try and get a modern television star to return a photo. Just about impossible.

I'd like to meet DVD as well. I've heard nothing but great things about him from people who have met him, and from people who lived in Danville, not far from my home.

I remember a few years ago on TV some story about DVD as an 'unknowable' man. They interviewed MTM, and she reported that while doing some TV show together (not the DVD show) she had the dressing room next to his and could hear when he had visitors. She said that he greeted everyone exactly the same, said the same thing to each one, and bid each one goodbye using the same words. On the same show Dick's brother Jerry agreed, 'Yeah, no one really knows my brother. He's a great guy but there's a part of him no one ever gets to see. Even me.' I found that very interesting...
