Conrad Bain is a good actor in his own right and I am sure he will be forever known in Maude. But, despite some good acting chops from the old timer himself, as the seasons progressed did Mr. Drummond's character went from a kindly rich man who always made the speech as to how money does not make everyone happy, lessons to Willis and Arnold, etc. to a very Scrooge-like character later in the seasons. For example, there were some episodes where he did not give a damn about the working people and only cared about his money. I mean, sure, Mr. Drummond always had $ on his mind, but did you think the changes in Drummond's character made him all the more spiteful? Just thinking about it and want to see what everyone thinks about it.

I really don't know what show you were watching, but that doesn't sound like Diff'rent Strokes to me. Mr. D really didn't change all that much with the exception of falling in love with Maggie.
