Isn't it interesting that we see Florida's brother, nephew, and cousin(s?). Yet we only see James' father, but no other relatives. We knew James had brothers and/or sisters, but we never seen them. Interesting huh? What do you think?

I always wondered about that as well. I wouldve been nice to see at least one of James brothers or sisters appear on the show.

If they were as poor as the Evans, they probably couldn't afford to travel to Chicago.

Was it ever said that James had brothers and sisters?

I found it odd that none of his relatives attended his funeral. :(

I don't think so, I think he was an only child.

I thought the lady who cried all the time and was in a few other episodes was related to James. I can't remember her name but I thought she was a relative.

Wanda, I knew it was something like that. I always thought she was a relative but I guess not. On the first one she is in I thought she flew it from somewhere?

That is not only odd, but kind of sad as well, concerning the fact that not one of James' relatives/kin even attended his funeral or wake.
SitcomGyrl, good point to bring up... ;) b/c until now, I didn't give that much thought at all, as far as that particular episode was concerned! Wow...

Doesn't matter...not one single member of James' family appeared at the funeral...only his wife and kids.

Yeah, you'd think that James' father would've been somewhere around that particular scenario, eh?
But then again, James and his father were estranged, and so we can kinda rule him out altogether as a "possible funeral attendee"... :p :happyface

Sad, though. :p

Yeah but then we really didn't need to see him show up AFTER the funeral eps with his girlfriend on Thanksgiving. On top of it, change the subject when Florida said she still misses James so much. That's when I stopped liking that character

Oh, I know, I thought that was so rude of him not to say anything when Florida said she missed James. He could of at the very least said, "I know" or something, but nothing.

Well he was a dead beat dad, he hadn't seen his son for over 30 yrs.

Maybe James didn't have any family members that he was close to. He always mentioned that it was him and his folks. He never said anything about aunts and uncles, sisters and brothers.

I just never understood why it was in the script for the Father to act like he didn't care-lol

He probably cared, But being a man, and since some men have the mentality that they shouldn't show weakness. He probably just sucked it up and kept it to his self.

Ha!, I agree, what the heck was up with that?!!?; first, James' father does not even attend his own son's funeral, but shows up in later episodes...Hmmmmmm (can you say.."crappy" writers on this show!";)

James father worked on a ship as a cook. It is very possible he didn't even know about the death until after the funeral was over.

They could have still had the father say something in regards to James death instead of changing the subject

Did we actually see the funeral? I only saw them back at the house, but it was a 2-parter, right? I never saw the actual funeral.

No, it went from Florida and the kids finding out about his death in a telegram, to the apartment after the funeral.

I've seen it on shows before. Usually just at the funeral parlor...not the gravesite.

I asked because I was reading that nobody from James' family attended his funeral. Now I find out we never saw his funeral. He could have had 50 relatives there. They could have gathered elsewhere afterwards, went home, caught planes, whatever.

Janice most funerals on sitcoms are not for the MAIN character of that particular show-LOL Examples, Jeffersons, Fresh Prince, and Mary Tyler Moore, and Maude

So, that means nothing. The fact remains, his funeral was off camera; therefore, nobody can state who was there, or wasn't there.

You can speculate until the cows come home, but nobody can state anything with certainty.

If James relatives was at the funeral why wouldn't they come bac to the house with everyone else? So that was proof right there that they didn't attend

I've been to relatives funerals where I didn't go back to their house or childrens house. Like I said before maybe James wasn't close to his family other then his mom.

Was it ever said that James mom was dead or alive???

That doesn't prove anything. Simply because we don't see something, doesn't mean it didn't happen. His relatives could have attended his funeral or maybe they didn't. It's anybody's guess.

Unless a character makes a statement that let's us know the deal, we'll never know.

There's no debate here Solomon. I know you're probably itching for a new one, but it's not here. You can't argue that characters weren't somewhere when the episode doesn't exist, lol.

People deal with loss in different ways. Not mentioning his son may have been his way of dealing with his loss. He may have fealt very ashamed that he missed the funeral.

I also found it interesting that his father was not at James' funeral. Or at least he didn't come by the house to pay respects after the funeral. I found that odd, especially considering they brought his character back to play on a couple of later episodes, and he barely even mentions James.

The writers messed up big time there. That was an opportunity for Florida (at least) to talk abt him and have a good cry with his father. A good five minutes would have satisfied me, since they needed to get back to the topic of grandpa visiting.
