Last night I watched the episode where Thelma and Keith were arguing and broke their engagement. When Florida was trying to calm down a crying distraught Thelma, she was telling her stories about her wedding to James. She kept refering to James by his first name and not "your father". She did that several times. I just thought that was odd. It was as if she were talking to a friend and not her daughter. Oh well...just a thought..:crazy:

I guess they wanted to remind viewers that James Evans was Florida's husband. I guess for people that weren't tuning in from the beginning. It probably would've made more sense to say your father.

I didn't see it, but it is strange. I would've had my mother locked up if she referred to my father by his first name to me.

Edith did the same thing a lot with Gloria on AITF....referred to her father as Archie.

Another oddity to me is on Fresh Prince, how Will, when he's talking to his cousins...he calls their father Uncle Phil.

I guess you are right.

I've heard people on a lot of shows refer to people by name instead of "your dad" or whatever. I think they do that sometimes so that the people in the audience are clear who they are talking about, even though it does sound dumb.

I know what you mean. In my family we use our spanish language when referring to our relatives, mostly uncles and aunts. Uncle in spanish is "tio"...so when I see my cousin I will say "How is MY TIO doing?" I don't ever say "How is YOUR FATHER doing?" It's more out of respect and sincerity. It just seems to come naturally for us and most hispanics to say things that way.

I liked their little chat...it really helped bring Florida back into the fold.
