CanWest Mediaworks, the Canadian media company that owns various networks including Global, CH, and PRIME, will discontinue Prime and give it a new name, logo, and programming lineup. Effective June 1st, PRIME will be known as TVTropolis and will feature programming from the 1980s and 1990s, including "Married With Children", "NewsRadio", "Ned and Stacey", "Ellen", and "Grace Under Fire". Here is the official press release which will give you all the details:

This is the new program schedule, which will take effect exactly 4 weeks from today:

Personally, I'm not too thrilled about all this since I prefer shows that are a lot older than what they'll be offering, like "Welcome Back, Kotter", which will soon be history. (And yet they kept "MASH"! Go figure!) But, for those of you who like the newer stuff, TVTropolis should be just right for you.

Looks like Canadians are going to get the shaft too. I guess anyone who likes good tv from the 1950's and 1960's is just up the creek and can not have even one channel out of ten million out there. Go figure. Just what we need another channel showing the same old crap that is already on 5 different channels already

The BEST TV in the last 10-15 years???? WHAT best? the best thing on network TV since the late 80s have been the morning test patterns!!!! Good thing they are keeping M*A*S*H , at least ill have SOMETHING to watch on that channel ( since I'm already paying for it anyway )

Bummer! Why are older shows the backburners these days?

It doesn't matter. I'll find other channels to watch. I would suggest to others that if they don't like what PRIME is doing that they find other alternatives as well. That's the only way these networks will listen, whether they be in Canada or the US.

By the way, how dumb does that new name sound? TVTropolis! What a joke!

The other thing that annoys me is that shows like "Welcome Back, Kotter" and "Newhart" aren't shown on any other stations in Canada. Without PRIME we won't get to see those shows anymore. Same goes for "The Golden Girls." :(

um breaking bonaduche and celebirty fit club aren't 80's or 90's shows, in fact they are from like the last two years.

What's with this endless obsession with M*A*S*H on this channel?

I don't think they'll get rid of that show even if we payed them to pull it off.

I read in the Calgary Herald that they will be producing three new shows based around what happened to child stars, old television shows, etc.

It's everywhere you look. Every station, every big-wig city in the world plays this show to death...lol!

They air the same episodes from the same 3 seasons, and it gets boring. They should shove M*A*S*H on DejaView and get rid of that Super Dave Osborne show on that channel. It's stupid.

Give me Mr. Bean instead. I miss that show. It used to be on CBC.

You are right, Mister Ed. Here are the shows in question, from the Channel Canada website:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Currently In Production:

Ad Persuasion - A series spotlighting the world’s most inventive, seductive and bizarre TV commercials. From TRICON FILMS AND TELEVISION. (26 x 30)

FANatical - Following the world's most obsessive TV fans. From PEACE POINT ENTERTAINMENT GROUP. (26 x 30)

Inside the Box - The ultimate game show for TV junkies. From LONE EAGLE ENTERTAINMENT. (26 x 30)

Popaganda - A talk/magazine style environment of pop culture supported by the Internet generation. From THE NIMBLE COMPANY. (26 x 30)

Whatever Happened To? (working title) - A half-hour series catching up with iconic stars of the ‘80s and ‘90s. From PYRAMID PRODUCTIONS. (26 x 30)

In Active Development:

And Finally - A fun look at the slice-of-life stories news programs around the world use to end their shows. From ARCADIA ENTERTAINMENT

Don’t Touch That Dial - A mismatched pair of quick-witted TV critics regale viewers with their take on classic and not-so-classic TV shows. From producer Patti Poskitt.

Starring In…With JR Digs - This unscripted series follows JR Digs as he gives people the chance to have their own TV show for a day. From MOUNTAIN ROAD PRODUCTIONS.

TeleVintage Cartoons - A look back at cartoons that shaped our Saturday mornings and pop culture in general. From HILTZ SQUARED MEDIA.

Debuting June 1 in 5.6 million homes nationwide, TVtropolis (www.TVtropolis.com) is the only national network fuelled by back-to-back hit TV from the last 10-15 years. Shows such as Seinfeld, Ellen, Frasier and Married… With Children - and buzzworthy celeb-reality series - including Celebrity Fit Club and My Fair Brady - put TVtropolis on the map as a TV lover’s destination. Viewers will find TVtropolis in the channel formerly occupied by Prime.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Personally, I like these new shows better than some of the old ones that will show up on June 1st. That's still no excuse not to bring back good stuff like "Kotter" or "Bewitched" or any of the other classic shows that PRIME used to have until they dumped them on DejaView.

By the way, once the US networks finish their upfronts, the Canadian networks, specialty, and digital channels will announce their schedules beginning next week. If there is anything worth watching, I'll post it and let you know. Keep watching this space for all the details.

Thanks for all that information, Sal! :D I wish TVTropolis dropped Married... with Children, because CMT Canada is showing the show right now and I don't think we need two networks airing the same program.

Ned and Stacey? GOOD LORD!

I'm just looking forward to Beverly Hills, 90210. I can't wait to watch that show again! Too bad we don't get Soap Net in Canada. I can't believe they are dropping The Golden Girls though.

I think it's a welcome change. I'm tired of Prime's current line-up -- it's time for them to give Bewitched, Jeannie, and the Golden Girls a break.

Although I definitely would like to see 60s, 70s and 80s stuff on their schedule, it is at least nice to see shows like Ned and Stacy, Ellen, and Grace Under Fire. I don't think any of those shows air elsewhere in Canada right now, and haven't for a while, or at least not in western Canada, where I live.

Thumbs down for keeping Seinfeld, MASH, and (adding?) Frasier. Those shows are so tired right now...

Mister Ed
05-20-2006, 10:07 PM
I Dream of Jeannie isn't shown on Prime and Bewitched is only shown on weekends. ;) Maybe they could tone it down to one episode a day of The Golden Girls.

Oops, I guess it's been a while since Jeannie was on Prime.

Still, this schedule is more interesting that their current (http://www.canada.com/topics/entertainment/tvchannels/prime/schedule%20april%207%202006.pdf) one.

I just read about this today. I am in a bad mood now.

Prime already had been going downhill from when it first premiered.

Sundays would usually be a good time to watch some classic TV, and would did Prime have, some reality crap that was already on another channel.

I watch Prime for the GG. I like Welcome Back Kotter also, but since they moved it to noon I hardly watched it then. I agree that they could cut down to one episode of GG, but to take it off completely?

Then there's MASH. Why is this show always on? No matter how many times the schedule changes, the one constant is MASH.

Did Prime used to show "Get Smart?" I can't remember.

That sucks bigtime....I live in the U.S. and if it weren't for Prime I wouldn't have gotten the chance to see Welcome Back Kotter or The Courtship of Eddie's Father. I bought these dvd sets on iOffer from someone who taped them from Prime. They don't show these great old shows in the States anymore. Maybe you all should start a letter writing campaign, bombard the studio with complaints.

This may be a long shot, but you can email CanWest and bug them to air Welcome Back Kotter on DejaView or on MenTV. They usually don't release their Fall schedules until Late July/Early August.

Here is their email:

contactus@globaltv.ca

Good Luck!

:)

By the way. The CRTC announcecd last year that some Canadian digital channels can be added to U.S. cable and satellite services. It doesn't hurt to ask them how you can subscribe to some of CanWest's channels.

Start a petition. ;)

Today is June 1st, which means that TVTropolis is now officially open for business. Earlier, I mentioned how I'm not crazy about most of their shows as well as the direction that they're headed with their programming. However, on the positive side, and this is the only positive that I've found about them, the website is excellent. Take a look:

http://www.canada.com/tvtropolis/index.html

Now imagine how good this site would look with info and pictures from the programs that PRIME and DejaView used to show instead of what they're airing now. It's just an awful shame.

Mister Ed

Well, the only show that I am happy about is Beverly Hills, 90210. That hasn't been shown in Canada in almost six years. I do like The Nanny and Ellen, but I can watch those on DVD. Overall, I'm not very impressed with this network except for one show. They need to get rid of Ned and Stacey, IMO.
