GoldenGirlsFan92 06-07-2006, 11:24 PM What was this show about?
treky 06-08-2006, 01:03 AM all I remember is, she was single, and she moved back to her hometown in, I think, New Jersy? And Cloris Leachman played her mother.
GoldenGirlsFan92 06-08-2006, 10:18 AM Thank you for the info.

This show had its hits and misses. Unfortunately, it was the couple episodes that got the most attention that were the misses. The debut episode, which got pretty decent ratings, was one of the misses. Very weak. And the episode that guest-starred several cast members of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" was also weak. Most of the other episodes were hilarious. Unfortunately, most people didn't realize that because they didn't see them. In spite of those couple weak episodes, I think this was one of the best sitcoms in recent years, better even than her prior long-running sitcom. It was a shame it didn't get noticed.
NOVARick 06-11-2006, 05:18 AM I will definitely buy this DVD. I've been dying to see that hilarious episode where Ellen wound up working at that Hooters-type restaurant ever since it first aired. Cloris Leachman, by the way, was wonderful on this show.

My theory of why it was cancelled is that I think people thought it was simply going to pick up where she ended her previous series. If you remember the last season of "Ellen," every episode was about her character dealing with her homosexuality. The coming out episode and the next couple episodes that followed were very funny, but it continued to be the same theme every week, it got to be a bit much. When she returned a few years later in "The Ellen Show," in the first episode, which got pretty good ratings, it was established that her character on this new show was also gay. I think a lot of people watching that night probably figured, here we go again, this was going to be a repeat of the final season of her previous series. So after they first episode they tuned out. But in fact, after that first episode, there was hardly any mention of her character being gay. Rather than being a regular theme on this series, like in the first series, it was no more than the basis for an occasional joke.
This show was very clever and so well cast and well written. I just got my DVD in the mail a couple weeks ago and I'm finding it's every bit as hilarious as I remember it. In fact, I can't really think of any show that is as consistently funny as this one. The fact that it was so abruptly canceled is really a shame. If programmers had given it a fair chance to find an audience like they used to do in the old days, I think this show would have had a long run. Unfortunately, that's not the way things work these days. If a show doesn't deliver immediate high ratings, it's axed. Imagine if television executives in the past had had that attitude, classic shows like "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and "All in the Family" and "Cheers" would have been buried after only a few months, which would have been our loss. Such is the case of "The Ellen Show." Thanks to the impatience of those network programmers, we all missed out on something really wonderful. Oh well, at least we have these 18 episodes to enjoy (several of which were never aired).
