I'm not a huge fan of Ewan McGregor but he is VERY popular here. I have seen Trainspotting several times, a lot of people think of it as the best Scottish film of all time. I think that's probably a fairly accurate assumption. Yeah, Trainspotting isn't exactly a happy movie! Actually I haven't read all of the book but I'm told that the book and the movie are pretty similar to each other, which is good cos I hate it when they make films from books and totally change the story. You should read Trainspotting if you can get hold of a copy. Thing is, it's all in Scottish dialect so it might be kinda difficult for you to figure out what they are saying (although you got the "fitba" thing pretty well so maybe you won't have too much trouble with it http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif )

Well, I actually read the screenplay after I watched the film a couple of times and it wasn't TOO hard. It was actually good for me, since I could go back and actually understand what they are saying. ( I had no idea Sick Boy was talking about James Bond in the beginning...). But I should go run out and snag a copy in any of the bookstores around here...
I skimmed through Palanuik's novel right before I went to go see 'Fight Club' in the cinema , but I didn't read a whole chapter or anything. But yes, I remember a friend of mine saying the ending was a bit different from the book to film... i'll have to go pick up that too.
