View Full Version : Was Don Rickles more or less doing his act was was he acting?
gilligan fanatic 04-28-2006, 10:58 AM From what I have read about the show it sounds like Don Rickles does his insult jokes on the show. I have heard one of his albums and I have seen him on the Dean Martin show and he is funny. I was just wondering if he is playing himself basically or if he is trying to be different but still using the type of humor he uses.
Note on title: I meant to write or for the first was. I need to pay attention more to what I type.

from you lol. For a while I couldn't figure out who was on your avatar and then I looked it up. Then I started seeing Don Rickles' act and then I looked up him on TV and of course CPO came up, along with three other bombs he had.

I am not sure/clear as to what you are asking, but didn't Don Rickles do some dramatic acting before making it big as a comedic actor?

He was criticized for being a worst bigot than Archie on the show.

The usual sites, IMDB, TV Tome, Don Rickles website. Nothing really more than that. I haven't got that involved in it.

I think I read he was in some war movies in the 60's.
I am saying was he playing something similar to Seinfeld. I know that he wasn't playing himself he was a CPO but where Jerry is himself but not directly. I know its a confusing question.

So what was it that you found out that makes you want to see CPO Sharkey?

Wow, sounds very interesting. I didn't know anyone could be worse than Archie.

Sharkey only made fun of blacks, and Archie made fun of all races. that was the difference

I like Don Rickles humor

in his act, he makes fun of everyone. So that kind of answers my question from my first post.

The other think that seperated him from Archi is that Sharkey would try to imitate black people. We both know Archie never did that-lol
EmpressDR 12-16-2006, 12:32 AM If you saw the ep of Get Smart where he guest starred in a two-parter, you'd see that Rickles is funny minus the racial jokes.
He should've done sitcoms where there was none of it --he didn' need it. CPO didn't use it as much as a later series he did. It was a funny series.
To me, I think the point was that Rickles has such a funny delivery that anything he said was hilarious, even to those he insulted --in his act, he did it directly to each person. And if the person didn't laugh, or was upset, it wasn't going to be funny at all.
SEE the 1975 Don Rickles special he did, where he had a sketch where he went to hell and the devil told him that his kind of humor was just right for hell. But then Don did his bit directly to a group of "devil's angels" wearing black hooded capes --and with no laughtrack, no live audience and all of the "victims" being dour and silent, not really seeming to hear him --the "humor" by itself really isn't funny at all.
His act was about its interactive quality.
And he wrapped up the show with a song: "I'm a Nice Guy."
See him that Frankie and Annette beach film, Muscle Beach Party
as Jack Fanny --a rif on Vic Tanny :happyface
[ Once, when he guested Johnny Carson's Tonight show, he broke Johnny's pencil box or cigarette box or drawer, and Johnny came back the next night, and asked what happened, Ed McMann told him, so Johnny got the cameramen to follow him into CPO Sharkey's studio, where they were in the middle of taping --Johnny goes onto the set, and hilarity ensues. Next time he was on the Tonight Show, Rickles brought the tape from the CPO Sharkey's POV. ]
  :happyface
EmpressDR 12-16-2006, 12:54 AM Actually, I've always wanted to ask a question about one episode, where the fellow who played Lt Whipple, I think. It was Jonathan Daly. He was briefly in It's a Wonderful Life as the guy who got another guy to open up the gym floor beneath Donna Reed and Jimmy Stewart so they fell in the swimming pool. In Sharkey he had a beard, and one episode, where they had a new commanding officer who ordered facial hair to be shaved. He didn't want to do it --but he did, and when he came up to the new Captain, he was saying things like he was cleanly shaved or something, but the Cap was paying scant attention. Finally Cap looked up, and said, "Oh, hello Whipple. Did you ever think about growing a beard? You have a weak chin."
HUGE laughs from the audience --but the actor ( Daly ) had fire in his eyes. His facial reaction told me that he wasn't expecting that line --and he took it personally. I bet he didn't want to shave exactly because of that receding chin, and the show thought it would play funny if they just surprised him. But he looked mad and that was disrespectful to him.
I'm still not 100% that was his name, I think it was Daly.
