View Full Version : How much of your online life is known?
swedeace 04-27-2006, 08:44 PM Who knows about your online foruming life to people you know in real-life? And to what extent do they know your online info (username, forum name, writings, etc...). Okay, let's assume stuff that's NOT a MySpace site since I am sure many of you are going to say that your friends are on yours. I am more interested in the forums and instant messages.
My friends and some co-workers know I forum. They know the forum names, but they don't know the URLs. I don't give them out because I write a lot of personal stuff here I wouldn't want certain people reading. My sister is one of the only family members who is computer-literate, but I don't tell her which forums I frequent. Even less with her because I write stuff I don't want her to know or question or become a nosy body over. They are like my own personal and private places, I guess.
What about you?
Dutabi84 04-27-2006, 09:03 PM Pretty much none of it. I've mentioned something about this website to my mom once, but not in any great detail.
gilligan fanatic 04-27-2006, 09:11 PM people know I am online a lot but they don't know any sites I go to.
My roommate knows I post on this site, but to others like my family, I tell them I post "on some TV message board," but I don't name names.
Ireneparalegal 04-27-2006, 09:14 PM Mmmm, well my daughters know abt this place.
Other than that, i don't tell no one really. Abt this place or THE OTHERS:eek:
EmoJoe 04-27-2006, 09:17 PM basically only my family and close friends know.
Czas na Zywiec 04-27-2006, 09:25 PM No one. I prefer not to mix people I know offline with the ones I only know online.

Mr. Television 04-27-2006, 10:15 PM Nobody knows I post here and thats the way I like it.
swedeace 04-27-2006, 10:47 PM Very interesting answers, everyone.
This brings up another interesting question, especially to those whose family/friends know you frequent "some TV forum" but not really know the name of the forum:
If they ask which site, how much info of that do you give them?
Courtnee 04-27-2006, 10:48 PM my close friends know...
MaydayMalonesGirl 04-27-2006, 10:51 PM Nobody knows and I don't intend on ever telling anybody. My parents would probably be weird about it, anyways.
Brian Damage 04-27-2006, 10:55 PM My wife knows I post here and knows my user name. I also have a friend at work that knows I post here, he even registered himself. I use to know another woman who posted here, but she is long gone now.
Number 9 Dream 04-27-2006, 11:53 PM I usually keep my online activities pretty private--only my best friend knows of some of the sites I go to (but not all). I really don't want my family knowing about it.
Janice 04-27-2006, 11:57 PM I'm a member at only two message boards. The only person who knows about them is my husband.
retrochick9 04-28-2006, 12:01 AM It's nice talking to people with similar interests. No one I know is as obsessed with older shows as much as I am, so it's nice to discuss it with other people. I think everyone has their own "online secret life", lol. You know damn well when you get instant messages from friends/family that everyone else is sitting there at their computer screwing around doing the same kinda crap you are, LOL.
Brent88 04-28-2006, 01:07 AM My parents know that I visit messageboards, but they don't know I'm involved in so many or that I'm so active in them. I also go into a Chatroom(not just random ones, the same one every night with well-known friends from one of the boards) and they have no clue about that. I don't reveal my exact location though, however, my age is known. I don't keep that a secret and I have shared my picture with a few people.
Karen* 04-28-2006, 02:28 AM Only my family knows that I go on forums a lot. I mention it to my friends too, but they don't seem to care that much.
~LadyJess~ 04-28-2006, 11:44 AM No one in my family knows, a couple of my friends and my boyfriend know but they don't know the actual messageboard.
Georgia's on my Mind 04-28-2006, 11:50 AM i dont tell people, i use this website as a source of solid ground and as an escapism
Nighthawk76 04-29-2006, 11:04 AM No one knows that I post here or on any other message boards. I'm a very private person even around my family and friends.
Penny Lane 04-29-2006, 11:31 AM No one knows that I come here. I have mentioned going on message boards to people but I didn't say where. :D
Jonathan 04-29-2006, 01:23 PM No one knows that I come here. I have mentioned going on message boards to people but I didn't say where. :D
Same here, Marlene.

I can relate with you. I am a very private person myself especially towards my sister. I always feel like I am being harshly judged from her. I know it isn't always so, but I've been so used to feeling this way that it's hard to break out of this thinking pattern.
