Song. Just curious to know from someone who was 18 in the year of 1975 or older about the Moving on Up phrase. Did you hear this phrase a lot before the Jeffersons premeired on CBS or was that term something that became popular once the Jeffersons became an Instant hit?

Look at your post Solomon. Of course the phrase became more popular because of the Jeffersons. But it was used before the Jeffersons, which is what I stated to you at least three times already. I never stated that the Jeffersons didn't popularize the term. When James said it, it didn't make me think of the Jeffersons as you seem inclined to think it should. LOL

But why wouldn;t it make you think of the Jeffersons if you was watching the jeffersons along with good times? The way james used it I would think would make you think of the Jeffersons, IF you was watching the Jeffersons at that time of your life. If you wasnt, then i can see you not thinking of the jeffersons at all. Or even if you watched the jeffersons but wasn;t a fan, i can also see you not thinking of them when james made the statement.

I honestly think the "Moving On Up" term started with The Jeffersons, meaning that it was a creation to set the Tone for the comedy that was ready to make it's debut on CBS

Now let's not beat up Solomon, lol, he has a good point. I thought the exact same thing when I heard James say it, of course I'm talking about seeing it now. I was 5 in 1975, so I can't really be an authority on it, LOL. I do remember my aunt having a mug in the 70's that said "Dyn-o-mite" on it and I thought of JJ immediately, LOL.

:smash: :bonk: *irene going bonkers

You got to remember, when George said it, there was nothing special abt it. He was just saying it. It's not like he said it the way JJ said DYNOMITE. if someone else on another show had said DYNOMITE the way JJ said it, it would surely cause me to think of that. But saying "movin' on up" was no big deal. It sure is now because of that theme song having been ingrained (sp?) in our memories. The Jeffersons theme song popularized that term, but they didn't invent it; so for James to say something abt "movin' on up" meant nothing but what anyone else would say in the same situation. There was a song called MOVE ON UP, way after the Jeffersons and yet, it didn't make me think of the Jeffersons.

ok good example. so why then would a different term of "movin' on up" make you think of the Jeffersons? If James had started to sing "movin' on up" i'd agree with you...but he didn't sing it, hell, he didn't even say that phrase. so why do you want to try and tell me what i would know better than you?

I was 10 in 1975 and watched The Jeffersons every week. I only watched Good Times occasionally back then, probably because it aired opposite other shows I liked. If I would have heard the phrase Moving On Up on Good Times I probably would have thought of The Jeffersons, mainly because I didn't really hear the phrase where I was living much. Even after The Jeffersons premiered I never heard it. I heard Dynomite all the time though.

Because I wanted you to turn the clock back and act like it's Septemeber of 1975. Ok let me say this, I think someone older at the time would have thought of the Jeffersons if they was also a fan of Good Times and heard james say He thought he was moving up. Someone who is 10 years old is probably not thinking about things like that but maybe a 20 year old in 1975 would be. Would you agree with that Irene? And please say YES-lol

It was not created for The Jeffersons but The Jeffersons sure made it famous. It might have been said before 1975 but I never heard it. As I said I didn't even hear it being used much where I lived after The Jeffersons. I'm an old movie buff and I don't remember that phrase being used a whole lot. Maybe its a genre I don't watch.

OK LOOK: I found on a website that had 70's stuff...don't ask me how i found it, but I did. I need to look for it again. Anyways, they had a million slang terms...it does not say when these slang words, terms were first used, but it shows it was popular. Take it for what it is worth. And being a kid, doesn't mean I was less informative. When I remember deleted scenes from shows, that has nothing to do with being a kid!:censored: :snob: I didn't cut and paste the whole thing, it was too much, but here are some; some i don't even remember being said, but it doesn't mean THAT IT WASN'T SAID:

Here is an album from the Civil Rights ere (the 60's) and look at the title! it was called that because the black race WAS MOVIN' ON UP IN THE WORLD! It features Aretha Franklin's "Think"; a YOUNG Stevie Wonder, James Brown, and other 60's singers of the time!

OK well you done research for sure-lol Guess you were right that MOVIN ON UP wasn't created by Janet and Jeff. I'm not afraid to admit I'm wrong if someone comes at me with some STRONG PROOF and that's what you did Irene. Ever think of changing your screen name to TVResearchQueen?-lol

Plus, I wasn't old enough for an allowance yet to get 8-track tapes

Yea I saw that.

I wish I still had my 8 track tapes but they've all been lost and I sold my tape player I think around 1980 or 1981 anyway. I've been a tape fanatic since those days. I've just progressed to VHS and DVDS.
